Interesting article - not much analysis after the top three picks - 1.Portland, 2. Gonzaga, 3. St. Marys. Although I don't agree that Portland will beat out the Zags, the article has some good analysis behind the forecast of the top three. I think the intangibles and the coaching skills of Mark Few may be underrated and the analysis acknowledges the difficulty of rating foreign players - who I think will play key roles off the bench this year and perhaps in the starting lineup for the Zags. I sound like a Zag's fan but I am for LMU, just think underrating the Zags is a mistake. In my best of all worlds, it will be LMU that displaces the Zags from #1, not Portland, but not this year. I stand to be corrected by reality. Thanks for the posting and an alternate view of the WCC.

Just on espn and I was looking at the commitments for this upcoming year in the WCC.
I'm a little worried about how our recruiting is taking a little bit of a hit according to espn's rankings. Last year we were the head of the class in the WCC and now we are middle of the road if not lower.
AIs ranking of 84 is the 10th ranked player in the conference out of 16 currently. These 16 players are from 7 teams(not gonzaga) and every team is bringing in one player ranked higher. While ScoutsInc. does make mistakes should we be afraid we are accepting a "lower class" recruit so early in the year instead of waiting to see what comes about? Just asking for some thoughts

Those ESPN don't really amount to much. Its a fun gage, but how a player does when he hits the D1 hardwood can't be judge by the scouts who see the players once or twice. Look at JD, I think he had a 76 ranking and he is pre-season first team WCC this year. Over all the WCC is bringing in a lot of upper 85-90 recruits which is pretty impressive for a mid major conference.

lmutourney2011:
Rankings are nice but they are just someone's opinion and no one is ever accurate. Look how many busts there are in the NBA and they have entire staffs looking at guys. Michael Jordan and all his basketball IQ drafted Kwame Brown with the #1 pick in the draft. Funny from a guy who got overlooked and picked behind another legendary tall guy disappointment.
Did you see how Scouts had Kevin Young ranked last year? He was on our team, playing er... really well and they had him listed as a verbal for the following year. I'm thinking they probably didn't watch him too closely.

Portland has 5 verbal commits already and only one is rated higher than AI - a 5'11" PG rated 85. The other four are 80, 79, 74 and 40. Saint Marys has a 6'3" PG rated 91, San Diego has four recruits rated 92, 91, 88 and 82 (impressive), Santa Clara has two recruits rated 91 and 86 (also impressive) and USF has two recruits rated 88 and 83. Pepperdine has one recruit rated 88. So far Gonzaga has no verbals. AI's ratings may go up this year if he continues the development he showed over the summer so its good to have him in the fold. He would have been our top recruit two years ago - JD came with the highest rating of our new squad under Bayno.

Great topic that should be discussed more. .We have given our only available scholarship for the 2010 season to a 5'8 or 5'9 undersized unspectacular :-[guard.Lmu is a guard loaded team with better than average guards. (The one and the two spot). This guy A.I is nowhere near a T.J Campbell or Demetre Goodson. We need a big to bag with the other bigs rebound outlet pass to get our guys going in the transition game(we are a fast young up tempo team)we got killed, mangled, and destroyed on the boards K.Young did good on the boards along with L. Armstead .We need help as in a true big to compliment Gariby.Gariby should start at the 5 spot he is ready. I can't understand our only scholarship going to a under sized guard and we still need a big desperately and are talking about taking a scholarship from one of the kids on the team who has worked his tail off for the team.Very bad decision Anthony Ireland 10th ranked player out of 16 in the WCC.(YES A"LOWER CLASS"RECRUIT).That one scholarship yes the only one we had for 2010 should have went to a true bigman.I would not trade a single scholarship player on our team for Anthony Ireland . AND I WOULD NOT GIVE UP THESE WALKONS FOR HIM EITHER ..(K.Baridini,K.Chine,G.Reilly) . (IMHO)

lmumbbfan - why so tough on AI? I think the coachs know what they are doing or they would not have gone after AI. I have not seen him play but he looks for real to me with good strength for someone his size. I agree releasing a current scholarship player for a second signee in 2010 may be a difficult decision - we'll see what happens here as the season unfolds.

lmumbbfan AI had pretty much entire A-10 after him as well as some big east interest. I'm not sure I would say someone who averaged 29ppg his senior year unspectacular. Have you read any articles about him or are you just making your judgments on the fact he is 5-9. I talked to friend of mine who has been a AAU coach for more than 10 years and he couldn't stop raving about Ireland. Said he is " f**king pitbull" who knows how to win. Here are his stats from Senior year. You might notice him scoring 46 points in one game. www.maxpreps.com/athletes/vvif5FTkd0Sota0j2CmciA/basketball-winter-08-09/stats-anthony-ireland.htmWhy don't you enlighten your self: A year ago Ireland was barely on the division I radar, but after shining with the New England Playaz this summer, the point guard suddenly became a priority for schools from some of the best mid-major conferences around the country. Anthony Ireland – If you’ve watched Ireland play for the last couple of years you know he has just continued to improve at each step along the way. This month seemed to be the culmination of that process as he proved himself with and against some of the best players you’ll find in the country. [/b] Anthony Ireland – Even without Naadir Tharpe in the line-up the Playaz still went 3-1 and won their pool in Cincinnati and took the title at BasketBull’s First Eight. The biggest reason may have been Ireland who has taken his game to new levels and has practically the entire A-10 taking note. [/b] So basically, what I'm saying is your assessment of AI is WAY off! Don't worry we will still be recruiting a big for the 2010 class, and there a bunch of great players (with 90 espn rankings ) in the mix.

We have very talented players in the back-court, but in my opinion in essence everybody is a 2 guard. JD does a excellent job at running point but I think he could be more effective as a SG. I think this is why the coaching staff went after AI. The key to have a successful team in the WCC is having speed, not necessary big guards at the point. AI is super fast and will provide a guy that will give us a up tempo offense. Look St.Mary's with Patty Mills, Portland with Campbell not the biggest guys but fast.
I hate the fact of thinking that we will move someone to get a big, because I know must of the guys personally and they are all great. But the coaches are going to get the best players possible to win. This is the business of college basketball.

ESPN ratings mean little when it comes to chemistry, intangibles, and assembling a balanced team.
From what I've read he seems to be a true leader at the PG position who should get even better. That is something we lack. Filling voids will be crucial in putting us over the edge in the WCC, as everyone has talent now. It's about getting the right mix.
waiting would have risked losing him as competition picked up.
