Some bright spots but overall sloopy and selfish ball. More tomorrow.

Yay for the win. Unfortunately a lot of sloppy play against a very bad team makes the win a little less exciting. Thanks for the rundown wrschnike. There were plenty of exciting moments of talent shown but the turnovers were too great, out of control fouling, and allowing Hope to rack up too many points in the 2nd half is not a great sign. Shooting % was bad especially from the 3pt line is NOT fun. This will provide a lot of teachable lessons to the team. We are young and the rust was evident. I don't think the lack of solid/consistent game play will be indicative of the season.

Thanks ironlions (looking forward to your comments tomorrow) and fanblade - do not disagree! Stats are posted now on LMU website and I want to offer some updates to my comments. Viney - had 18 points and 12 rebounds despite a slow start. A genuine star with parents in the stands. DuBois - 5 of 7 points from the foul line, 1 for 6 from the field. OK but an off night from the field. Diederichs - 0 points on 0 shots, 0 for 2 foul shots. 1 rebound in 9 minutes with early foul trouble. 1st center??? Yes, let's give veterans the respect they deserve, but we have to move forward with the program. Kelsey Chine - 2 of 3 for 5 points in 8 minutes - quite a walk on! ;D Kalipinde - great game, got his 20 minutes amd might have been more if Davis were rested instead of played. Just wait until his 3 pointer falls with more regularity - unstoppable. Vernon Teel - correction only 9 points in 28 minutes, 5 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 turnovers - team leader here. Garibay - 7 boards in 17 minutes, Osborne - 3 boards in 14 minutes. Osborne - 2 steals also. 3 of 5 from the field, 1 of 3 from the line. This kid is stepping up to the challenge. Hope did not present much of a challenge and the team let down a bit in the second half but the future looks bright!

I was amused at the comment regarding Viney's slow start. I checked the stats. play-by-play, and he had three rebounds, a blocked shot and a put back basket in the first 90 seconds. It looked like his shot was rusty, but he was pretty active right from the jump ball. If that's slow - bring on the fast stuff!
He also played the first 13 minutes of the second half, sitting down the last 7. About what he played in the first half. Interesting analysis from that point of view.
I usually judge the performance by more than missed shots. I agreed on the sloppiness and lax defense, especially in the second half. Free throw shooting is horrific, except for Larry, Drew and JD. So - those would be the three players I'd have in the position to drive, anyway. If you can't hit a free throw, why attack the basket? Vernon... drive and DISH.
Given has some maturing to do, but sure has an excellent starting point, with his athleticism. His game choices are "raw", for example too many threes, too much individual play, and then holding onto the ball at the end of the game, instead of moving it. That's high school, wanting to get fouled, shoot FT's and pad your stats. You move the ball, and make the defense catch you. But he'll learn.
Edgar and Alex were both sharper than I was expecting. It's a nice problem to have THREE bigs potentially earning time.
I'd hate to be stuck behind Viney in the line-up. Hopefully, Sweezy gets minutes in a different rotation instead of waiting for coach to sit Viney.
Laron was out of synch, and hopefully settles down. I'd hate to see him get buried in the lineup, after his ironman efforts last year.
Larry looked good. It's going to be fun watching him this year - he's got a nice shot, moves well without the ball and seems to make good choices out there. Hopefully, there wasn't a set back - he limped off the court.
My highlights of the game:
Viney's blocked shot early in the game. Woke us all up and said "we're here". Given's pass - don't remember to who - but it was beautiful. Kevin's dunk. Glad to see the energy and enthusiasm is still going strong. The number of players able to bring the ball down the court effectively. JD, Vernon, Larry, Given, even Viney a time or two. Not a bad thing to mix up who's starting the offensive sets. Given's block. That young man can get off the ground. In addition to hops -he is quick off the dribble. I'd like to see more drive and dish - but he'll get there. Alex's post move from the middle of the paint. Nice fake, turn, finish. Very text book, very smooth.
It will be interesting to see how this young team handles opening the season on the road and how deep Coach goes on his bench. Will he be a 7-8 man rotation coach, or go 10 deep? Tonight's 12 is probably pushing it. So players 8 through 12 need to polish up their game, learn their roles and execute.
Go Lions.

It was exciting to get the season underway last night. There were bright spots, but over all it seemed kind of disorganized and sloppy. I loved seeing the depth we have at each position, but it was frustrating watching a lot of me first, team second ball. To a certain extent this is can be expected for an exhibition game where there are a bevy of new players and the roles and line ups are still undefined. There is a lot of depth at each position and players want to display their talent. Add to this the excitement and nerves of the players and you can see why things seemed a little chaotic. In addition, we had a several players that were nursing injuries or just getting back from injury so it was a bit of a challenge figuring out the team. Overall, this was a completely different team than what I have seen in practice and scrimmages. We seemed to lack focus and toughness, and we better get our act together in the next week. Our free-throw and 3 point shooting was atrocious, and we let Hope out score us in the second half. I’m glad we have another week of practice before heading up to the Montana tournament.
Players:
Laron- After playing 30 mpg last year seemed a bit lost on the court. I think it will take some time to adapt to his new role on the wing. I saw him make some careless mistakes which shouldn’t be happening if he wants time on the floor.
Kelsey- One of the bright spots. I loved his hustle; focus and confidence- out played a few of the guys with scholarships last night.
Larry- It was nice to see him on the floor but I wouldn’t have played him until he is 100%. Luckily he seems he just tweaked his ankle. You could see the talent he has.
Tim- Playing a smaller quicker line up seemed frustrating for the bigs and led to a lot of fouls. Timmy only played 9 minutes and had 3 fouls
JD- He has sat out a lot of to nurse his foot, and you could see a bit of the rust last night. A decent performance for a first game back
Edgar- Great to see finally on the floor. He did a great job in the minutes he got, was very productive. I have said in the past that he could start at the 5 and he showed why last night.
Ash- I wish I could have seen him on the court last night. I think he will work his way into the starting 5.
Given- A very bright spot last night’s game. I loved his speed and athleticism. He only played about 20 minutes, but man was he productive. As he continues to work on his dribbling I see him getting more PT and possible a spot in the starting 5.
Alex- lunch pale check, hard hat check. Great effort and production in the time he was one the floor. I think he has a great basketball IQ and is really learning how to use his big body.
Quincy- I believe he will be red-shirted this year. I think he is injured too.
Brad- I always love his effort, but not the best game for him last night.
Teel- despite his free throws and his propensity for turn-overs, he just a flat out baller. It will be hard to keep him off the floor. He just needs to cut down on this dribble time and not turn it over.
Drew- Excellent game, excellent talent. He did everything right in my book. He even got a note from Goodman on fox- Oregon transfer Drew Viney, who sat out last season, led Loyola Marymount with 18 points and 12 rebounds in an exhibition victory over Hope International.
Kevin- Great job in the first half. I believe he took an elbow to the face and was kept out of the second. Without a need to play as minutes he is really going to be great weapon for us.
Last night was good indication on how we really need a true PG like Anthony Ireland. I think he would have tore up Hope’s back court last night.
We have too many walk-ons! There was literally not enough room on the bench with guys sitting on the floor. During time outs we seem to waste precious time moving all the players around because there are so many of them.
Based on my observations last night starting 5 vs. Boise State:
PG- JD SG- Given (Depending on Teel’s injury) SF- Kevin PF- Drew C- Edgar

ironlions - good review - re your starting 5, I agree - but did you mean Larry's injury or Teel's in your call on the starting SG slot? irishlion - re Viney's slow start, I was referring to the observation that he only had about 4 points after 15 minutes into the game (if I remember correctly) before he started pouring them in. He played well the whole time though. The Zag's board has 3 pages of comments on their game against a Canadian squad last evening which the Zags dominated. Lots of praise for Arop and Sacre. Apparently Bol Kong did not play for some reason. They like their freshmen as well as we like ours. They also are looking for a Redshirt as they are loaded at PF.

Larry isn't ready to start yet. I meant Teel's injury. He seemed to have hurt himself last night late in the second half.

I don't think Teel hurt himself in the second half, I think the coaching staff was just really frustrated that he wasn't passing the ball as much as he should. I remember one play down the court, Vernon just kept dribbling and Coach yelled, "PASS THE BALL", and then he turned it over by driving . . .
I love Vernon and he can be an AMAZING player, but he has to learn when to drive and score, when to drive and pass, and WHEN NOT TO DRIVE. I think he is still in last year's mindset that he has to score all of the points because we had little other options. Now he has tons of other options and it is up to him to use them.
If he does not play well and Larry is still nursing his injury, I think Given could possibly start. He looked excellent last night.

I have word that Kevin Young had flu like symptoms. He was held out the second half of the game for that reason. Still 5-6 for 10 points in 19 minutes is not too bad.

It looked like Teel pulled something when the Hope player fell on him...he was limping off the floor at the end of the night. I know VT has the ability to drive and find the open man... I watched him do it all summer- hopefully we will see it in the games soon. He had one excellent drive and dish to Young that stood out last night.

I do remember that. I hope he is fine.
My worry is that he'd rather make an amazing pass rather than the pass that needs to be made. I know he has the ability and I can't wait to see what he can do!

It looked like Teel pulled something when the Hope player fell on him...he was limping off the floor at the end of the night. I know VT has the ability to drive and find the open man... I watched him do it all summer- hopefully we will see it in the games soon. He had one excellent drive and dish to Young that stood out last night. yup, it was on the sideline play where a hope player fell on top of him when teel was a bit contorted, you could tell he was gonna come up limping and it looked like either a tweak of a joint or something pulled in his lower leg. He seemed to be able to walk it off but the coaches got him out of there with a that timeout really quickly so we'll see. Hopefully he's ok. I had a bit of a different perspective on Teel, Given, and Davis. Teel- seemed out of control. He had some tenacity on the offensive end cleaning up around the basket but his freethrows looked awful, and he seemed to be playing out of control continually. A LOT of pounding the basketball without really looking for other players. I was a bit disappointed. In his defense, i think he's trying to prove himself to himself, after that time off the floor last year and up and down season I think he was trying to regain some confidence and forced it a bit too much. Davis-STUD. He looks to have a solid stroke, but more importantly he can finish. Had one drive where he went straight through defenders in the paint to reverse it over on the right and it was a beauty. Kissed it high off the glass with some english to spin it in. You can tell he has a high basketball IQ. When he has the ball he's looking to make plays, and more importantly he plays under control. He seemed really confident on the floor, a true leader for this team I think (Btwn JD, Davis and Viney I think we can be confident we have some solid players who can lead whatever unit is on the floor). Given-TALENT. He's got a great first step, awesome footwork. You can tell he knows how to feel out his man and take advantage of the floor. Seems to have some solid passing skills, and has EXCELLENT body control when finishing around the basket. Davis, Viney, and Given missed few chip ins unlike the rest of the team. MOST Importantly he plays under control, maybe he didnt always execute 100% of the way, but he's also got a high BBIQ and is looking to make plays for the team. He just seems to have superb control of his body and the ball. Teel has bit of a habit of barrelling into the defense and trying to force it, Given uses his body, footwork, and handles to react to the defense, seal his man, and make plays. don't wanna get too excited, but this guy is worth the hype. I still think he comes off the bench to start the season but by conference play I don't think you can keep him off the floor. Viney- Solid player. He had some great defensive plays, boards, and cleaned it up around the basket. He's gonna FILL UP the stat sheet. He's just a great all around player. Alex- good instincts, he's got a strong base so it's gonna be hard for people to force us around down low. Ed- GOOD HANDS. He gets good position, is active, quick on his feet and has good hands for receiving those entry passes. Very impressive. awesome to have a bigman who can help intimidate the other team. Tim-weak game overall, just seemed to be a total off night, he'll rebound. Kelsey- Had some really good defensive activity. It was hilarious watching him, he bobs his head side to side a bit trying to anticipate and ends up looking like a cobra. Anyone got a guess for the size on Hope's pg #24 he looked like he couldnt have been more than 5-8 to 5-10 and I looked it up and he was listed at 6 feet HAHAHAHA RIGHT.
