No doubt about it, Vernon has turned the corner and become a team player and our leader. And the team is much better for it.
However it is not lost on me that Vernon cannot (or will not) make a Lay-up. He is shooting less than 48% from the field, which on its face isn't so bad. However when you look to see that 95% of his "shots" are lay-ups, and he's missing over 55-65% of his layups. Even with the fact these are usually contested, something is not right.
Vernon, you do a terrific job of penetrating, but after that its turn- over city. That because you miss lay-ups, and no one is there to rebound your throw-up! You need to "shoot" lay ups!! Don't just throw the ball up when you penetrate, thats doing "throw-ups", not shooting "layups". It makes me want to throw up that you are not making lay-ups.! You should be killing them with three point opportunities. If I hadn't seen this now for 6 games I wouldn't say anything. But its become glaring.
I'm old and I can do throw-ups Any one on this thread can do "throw ups". Pay me the $50,000, I'll do throw ups! (clearly, the penetration would be then be the problem).
In any event, this should be fixable. If only 70% of the layups were made, it would have changed every outcome this year.
Vernon, you're our hero, make your lay-ups!

Ah, there in lies the problem. Vernon is trying to play like he's our hero. That whole attitude needs to disappear, and the Lions need to start playing like a team. It doesn't matter who scores, or who hits the game winning shot. So be unselfish, and get the ball to the guy who can score it with a high percentage.
JD and Vernon both need to start making better decision. Because two or three bad, selfish decisions each game is why we are 2-5. (Well, ok, add weak defense and rebounding to it as well.)

waterboy - thanks for your comments - during Vernon's first year here, he seemed able to make a large percentage of those "throw ups" which came down soft around the rim. went in and often get fouled in the process. His "throw ups" seem off this year - they are not falling and they do look out of control. Coaches have brought discipline to his game this year, which appears to be against his better instincts. He needs to score in more intelligent ways or pass the ball.
