Looking at the recent NCAA RPI to get an idea about whats going on out West the top eight teams are Cal 13, UCLA 20, LMU 36, Irvine 42 Saint Marys 48, Bakersfield 49 Sacramento 50 and UCSB 53.
Lots of things could change between now and the tournament, but with only 48 tickets everyone after Irvine must be getting nervous and has work to do to assure themselves a berth.
The Lions have a ways to go themselves. They have a lead for their first automatic bid, but both Sta Clara and Porland are still close and in striking distance.
Winning the conference is the only sure ticket for every one out West.

David Ponce got his second straight WCC player of the week award based on his two goal USD performance... maybe more ominous was the fact that he didn't play in the Sta Clara match.
The Loyolan has an article on line detailing how David found his way to LMU, interesting reading.

College Soccer News has forecast the NCAA match ups on their website if the season ended now.
How things change from a year ago. Four WCC teams went last year, only LMU or the WCC champ would go right now per the 22 automatics plus the RPI at larges.
No Love for the West this year, CSN has only the champs going plus one extra from the Pac 6.
And in their scenario only one West team would be guaranteed to come out of the second round. Either Cal or the winner of UCLA vs Bakersfield.
LMU would face Irvine and the winner would have to travel to Michigan State for the second round.

As the other WCC teams realize the hopes of garnering an at large berth fade the focus will center on chasing the Lions. Six big games to go.

CSN has updated its projections of who is going to the NC2As and the matchups.
We are still the projected WCC champs and still are slated to play the Big West Champs. But now they think that will be UCSB. The Gauchos just beat #11 Duke whose rpi was about 22. What an interesting match that would be, considering us getting David Ponce. And remember how we beat them last year. The winner would then play Ucla.
And they forecast the game to be in Santa Barbara!

Still only the champs plus #2s from Pac-6 and Big West for six total. The Rpi system isn't working out in favor of the West this year. According to this scheme the six West teams would all play each other in the first and second rounds and only two max would get to the final 16. Maybe an anti-West bias brewing somewhere? No mention of the number 2s from the WCC or MPSF.
The Big West and MPSF both have tournaments so there still is a lot to determine who gets in for sure.
Sta Barbara isn't a shoe in but they are hosting the tournament this year so maybe they will gain some favoritism from the committee even if they don't get to the finals of their tournament?

Being ranked 22 in the coaches' poll bodes well for us, especially as one of our three losses is to the only unbeaten team in the country. Topdrawersoccer.com also lists us as at 20 in their 48 team tourney predictions.

Ya really cool for Max to be one of only two (I believe) non-MLS players on the Goal of the Week list.
