The Lions face Santa Clara here Sunday in a huge WCC match.
After dropping Wednesday's match to USD on the road 2-1, the Lions need to bounce back at home against the Broncos.
How could the ref not call a penalty with two minutes left against the Tororos, I'll never know, but that's a different story. The Lions played well and will be back on Sullivan Field with the home field advantage.
USF tied Portland last night giving the Pilots a one point lead in the standings. The Broncos remain unbeaten in conference defeating USD and pulled even with LMU in the points race.
Things are tight at the top and it's making for some exciting soccer.
I'll be there at the kickoff in support of the Lions!

Ugh, what a disappointing game. 2-1 loss in a game that we should have taken three points from. Especially with Portland losing it would have been nice to vault back into first place. Those 12 days off really killed our timing and chemistry seem like even thought I thought we played good soccer.

We had that 5 minute lapse late in the second half allowing two quick goals that cost us the game. After a slow start, we had 2 shots on goal to Santa Clara's 11 but we found our stride and overtook them on the shots on goal category plus we had loads of corners to their very few (fewer than 5 if I recall correctly). Unfortunately, it is only the shots that go in that make the difference and we got outplayed by a confident team with no losses yet in league (I believe). It was a lovely Fall afternoon at Sullivan Field in any case. Go Lions!

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WOMEN!!! It was a win they absolutely needed to keep their season alive. And a win over number 10 on the road to boot. They all must be ecstatic. Now all we need is for them to do it again when USD comes to LA.
The Bronco website has their story up with Martino getting the first goal and Sanford the second on a penalty after a red card to the Bronco goalie.
They out shot us by a wide margin but we must have packed in the defense well. Great job Ladies!!!!

In the mens' game we took the lead with 35 minutes left. At the time it looked like a long way to go to hold the lead. We seemed to gradually lose intensity as the contest wore on but still seemed in control. The Broncos kept shuttling in fresh players every five minutes or so.
On the first Bronco goal we got caught on a quick restart and were outnumbered by their attack. A block kick seemed to fall in their favor and it got blasted into the net to tie the game.
The first goal energized the Broncos and the they attacked forcing our backs to retreat. They laid the ball off to the second goal scorer who was alone at the top of the eighteen. He didn't miss.
We had chances in the last 15 minutes but couldn't get the equalizer.
In the last two minutes the Broncos handed the ball blatantly in the penalty area. The only ones not seeing it apparently were the near linesman and the center ref.

Things are still tight in the WCC race. Broncos are #1 with 19 points.
Saint Mary's beat Portland so they are now in second with 17 points
LMU remains at 16 points and is now in third
Saint Marys now has 15 points and is in fourth

I agree that hand ball was outrageous very late in the game! I don't know how the linesman - who was right there - missed it. We probably would have tied on the penalty kick and our overtime record is pretty good.

I saw the handball and so did everyone sitting near me and we were clear at the other end of the field.
Linesmen are often intimidated by the center refs into not making calls, who knows?
Several Lions were just jumping all over the place in frustration after that non call and screaming at the linesman. Our coach had a few choice words for the ref too but it didn't matter.
The Bronco who scored the winning goal was lucky to still be in the game. Earlier he had viciously elbowed Vinnie going up for a header. It could have easily been a straight red, but he escaped with a yellow. The Lions now need to look forward.
On to Portland!

It's going to be a battle in the mens' race, all the way to the final whistle. There are plenty of positives for the Lions. We play one more game than Santa Clara and can catch them even if they win out. We play Portland head to head next week and a win there puts us past them. Portland still has to play Santa Clara again. If the Lions play them one at a time and put up the points, I'm confident they can win the championship.
Time to focus! Only one WCC mens team looks to be headed to the NCAAs this year. Make it the Lions!

Ya as much as losing these last two was a disappointment, it is always nice to control your own destiny with two weeks remaining in the season. The forecast in Portland might end up being one of the bigger obstacles, but I like our chances.

You're right, I checked the Portland forecast. Rain, heavier Thursday, lighter Friday and Saturday. Mid 50s for temp. Not really that chilly. Should be okay I think for soccer. Lots of Portland fans will show up rain or shine.
