Congratulations to the Lions who were selected to the all conference teams.
Well deserved.
Roger Downes is an outstanding defender, no doubt. But how they overlooked Jonas Reiter is beyond me. And Tyler Krumpe for that matter too.
Jonas had the most minutes played behind Rafa and Roger and was in the center of the best defense in the conference.
Jonas knows he's counted on by the Lions and that will have to do for now. He was listed as a forward all year even though he lined up as a center back all the time. That may be an explanation, but not an acceptable excuse for overlooking him.
I guess they have to spread these around a bit and can't give them all to one team. Kyle Johanson was a force all year in the midfield for the Lions, how'd they miss him and I would have also picked Phil Da Silva.
I didn't see too many players all year that I would have picked over their Lion counterparts.
Patrick Wallen, USD, got player of the year. Mostly on the strength of his conference leading 12 goals, I suppose. I hardly think he is the best player in the conference. He is more aptly described as a big brute who sat up front all day and waited for the ball. All those goals didn't help USD that much in the standings, did they?
Rafa would have easily been my choice. He didn't score a lot of goals this year, but this year that wasn't his role. Soccer is a team game and with Rafa at control in the middle he made the Lions and all his teammates better.

Tawni Martino was selected to Top Drawers freshman all American team. Good for her, we all know how great a player she is, she's only going to get better and do more amazing things on the soccer field.
Earlier this season we lost to Notre Dame 1-0, the Irish moved to the final 8 by defeating past champion UNC 4-1. Every game is different but it shows how close the Lions are to being right there.

Yesterday the coaches, NSCAA, voted for Rafa. He made their All-American third team. Good for Rafa and all the Lions! Congrats!
