The San Jose Earthquakes acquired former Lion striker and defender Bobby Burling from Chivas USA 2 weeks ago. After playing a ton of minutes last year in defense for Chivas, Bobby has been traded to bolster their defense. He has played 90 minutes in one start since arriving in San Jose.

Bobby Burling is still up North in San Jose playing defense. He scored yesterday on a corner, heading in a goal to cap off a route of the New York Red Bulls. The Earthquakes won 4-0. I saw the highlight on Fox Soccer and Bobby still looks like he's having a lot of fun playing in the MLS.

It was his first goal in the MLS. Good for him. He's been close before, especially with Chivas. He'll get some more I'm sure.

Saw Bobby Burling on TV last weekend. He played center back again in the Earthquakes game against the Hotspurs from the EPL. Scoreless draw but the San Jose defense and Burling both played well.
You can catch another game tonight on ESPN 2 at 7:30 pm when San Jose visits Carson to play the Galaxy. I'll be watching and rooting for Burling and San Jose to keep Donovan and the Galaxy out of goal.

If you missed the Galaxy/San Jose game you missed an exciting battle between the two teams. It ended in a 2-2 draw which was a disappointment if you were rooting for the team with the LMU alum after 90 minutes of action. Donovan tied the score on a rebound from one yard out in the 90th minute.
The Galaxy were lucky to leave with a draw even though they dominated possession, controlled the ball, shots, corners and most everything else on their home field. The ESPN announcers were definitely favoring the Galaxy with their commentary and at times disparaged the Earthquake central defense with comments of inexperienced on at least two occasions. They had to contradict themselves several times to credit our man Bobby Burling with praise for saving tackles and clearances while thwarting seemingly endless Galaxy attacks especially in the second half.
In the paper Donovan is quoted as saying the Galaxy should have won the game. I'm not so sure. A lucky rebound falling to Donovan resulted in the tie. The Galaxy's first goal was the result of a missed offside call. Our fearless announcers could only muster a, "he might of been offside on that one". The Daily Breeze had the definitive report this morning when in reference to the play wrote, " forward Alan Gordon appeared to be offside." Which we should recognize as a soccer politically correct euphemism for, "he was definitely offside ya wanker".

Bobby Burling makes MLS team of the week. www.sjearthquakes.com/news/2011/07/burling-named-mls-team-weekChecking the stats for the quakes it looks like Bobby has started the last nine games for San Jose at center back, accounting for all of his 810 minutes this season. Rafa got into another game this week also to boost his number of minutes from 10 after his debut to 28.

Burling and Rafael Baca both started for San Jose. It was Bobby's 11 straight start. It was Rafael's first. The game was well into the second half and scoreless when Bobby recieved a red card. The ref couldn't figure who to give it to, but finally settled on Burling. It was a red and a penalty to boot. The game got away from the quakes after that. I surely am biased but after looking at the replay it sure looked like a dive to me. Watch the highlights and you can judge yourself. sjtv.neulion.com/mlsvp/console.jsp?catid=1883&id=17435by .

In further action following Bobby Burling's red card last week the MLS discipline committee suspended Saborio for taking "a dive". They claim his actions brought disrepute to the game and they fined him in addition to the suspension. Quite a half measure. Burling's red card wasn't overturned, the game is still lost and Bobby still has to miss the next match. The Quakes are still on the short end of the stick in this one. No mention of fines or counseling for the ref. The Quakes keeper summed up the feelings of many San Jose fans, he was fined for inappropriate "body language". www.sjearthquakes.com/news/2011/07/mls-discipline-committee-fines-quakes-keeper-busch

San Jose lost another game 2-0, some might say because of the loss of Burling to the red card he recieved last match. The quake center back playing in his place fell and allowed a breakaway resulting in the first goal. Water under the bridge. Bobby should return on the 6th. Maybe Rafa will get to play again too.

sjtv.neulion.com/mlsvp/console.jsp?catid=1883&id=18623Burling and Baca got starts again for San Jose against Toronto Saturday. Check the link for highlights in the 1-1 draw. Burling gets the assist on a nice flick on for San Jose. Baca had a great cross that somehow was missed by three of his teammates.
