The women close out their season with St Mary's away this week. While we gained another double digit winning record for the season LMU will fall short of their goal to make the tournament no matter what the result is in Moraga. The latest RPI posted this week has us at 83. Not nearly high enough when a top 50 was necessary. The losses to Santa Clara 14 and San Diego 43 sealed our fate. They are both poised to advance to the tournament with Portland. St Mary's is just ahead of us with an RPI of 82. The Lions need a win away to finish in the top half of the WCC and finish the season on a positive note.

The win at Saint Mary's gives us eleven for the year! Great job by the Lion women! But I don't think it will be enough. Our RPI may bounce up a little with the win over the Gaels but that bridge to the tournament might be a bit too far. Those one goal losses to the Oregon schools and the losses to Santa Clara and San Diego are probably the difference. Switch two or three of those around and I think things would have been different. Easy for me to say you say. And this year the majority of the teams we beat didn't have winning records. That hasn't helped us much at all either. Anyway we won't have long to wait for the selection committee to pick the final 64. What ever happens the Lion Women played some great soccer and should be commended for their efforts. Its been fun watching.

The WCC sends three to the tournament, but no tickets for the Lions. The final RPI was undoubtedly available to the selection committee but hasn't been posted yet on the NCAA website. It doesn't matter, I don't think we were that close at the end anyway. Eleven wins are a good thing but the only team I see in the tournament that we beat is Northern Arizona. They only got in by winning their conference.
One reason we aren't going is we lost to both San Diego and Santa Clara this year on the road. The men went to a double round robin conference schedule for the past few years because it eliminates and balances the unfair home field advantage. Women's basketball does the same why not soccer? Cost and length of season? Anyway we finished tied for fourth with the Peppers, not good enough. Second or third at least in the WCC is needed for post season and we didn't get there.
The PAC 10 sent eight teams. Our record against the PAC 10 was 1-2. The win was against U of Arizona. A team in crisis at the bottom of the PAC 10. We needed those wins against the Oregon teams, we were close but it didn't happen. We need to keep scheduling as many PAC 10 teams as we can and then get results. That is the other avenue to the tournament. Wins against tough teams and tough conferences. For us the PAC 10 is the closest. Getting them on the schedule is the hard part.
Eleven wins in a year when we needed at least fourteen.
Looking forward though we have a strong program but still need to step up in order to get to the next level.
