Santa Barbara is currently ranked as high as #3 in last weeks coaches poll. Their RPI is currently #48. They are scheduled to play the Matadors at CSUN in their conference semi finals this week. If they don't win the next two are they out of the tournament? I think so. I'm rooting for the Matadors just to see if I can hear the Gaucho coach whining all the way from Santa Barbara.

College Soccer thinks they are a lock and you maybe right too, but only 48 teams go to the mens tournament and 21 are from conference regular season or tournament championships. That only leaves 27 spots. Unless they win the next two remaining at RPI 48 it will be awfully close.

The NCAA published the latest mens RPI report sometime yesterday. The Lions are still hanging in at #15. It is clear now what the Lions need to get to the tournament. A win against Santa Clara Friday night would do it.
Santa Barbara made a big jump up to #32 from 48. Still bubble territory but really close.
The West Coast teams with a berth or a good chance, UCLA 5, San Diego 9, LMU 15, Stanford 18, San Diego State 22, New Mexico 28, UCI 29, UCSB 32. Portland 43, St Marys 44, and CSUN 47 are just outside with more work to do.
Lots of possibilities remain with a week to go.

Duke, thanks for the article from the Daily Sundial. The Big West Tourney may make or break things for all four teams involved. Cal Poly, RPI 105 for sure only gets in if they win both games, which could happen. That's the only guarantee for any of them. The Sundial figures UCSB a lock but I don't know. CSUN beat them at home already and a loss to the Matadors shouldn't improve their RPI. CSUN has the next highest RPI at 47 and is in almost the same boat as Poly only closer to the bow. I think the road to the tournament for the Big West right now favors the tourney winner and UCI.
Another big factor is the 500 rule. Seven teams, including LMU, in the top 48 haven't secured a break even or better season record yet. Depending on what happens this week that factor will open or slam the door for a lot of teams.

UCSB and UCI both won. Both probably are in now regardless of the outcome of the Big West final. Now its our turn to make sure we get in before the door closes. Go Lions!
