Is tomorrow too soon for spring soccer? Not for the Lions or their fans. Lion men play UCR away tomorrow at 1pm. The schedule is out but not yet posted.
Only two games at home, 3/7 at 3:15 against UCLA and 3/27 against the alumni.
Nearby though at the Home Depot Center a match against Chivas on Thursday 2/4 at 11 am.

Unless you're still shoveling snow or using the calendar at Stonehedge winter is over. Is there really ever winter as far as we are concerned here in LA? The NCAA champs, Virginia Cavs are looking at snow on the ground but the Lions are playing soccer now and looking foward to next season.
We lost the first spring match to UCR 3-2.
Note Well: Tomorrow at 11am Chivas USA vs LIONS changed to Sullivan field
Hope everyone planning to go the game has gotten the word

Reminder! Tomorrow the Bruins visit Sullivan Field for a match with the Lions at 3:15. No rain forecast Sunday, maybe the field will be playable.
Today the Ladies are also scheduled to play the Bruins at noon at LMU. It hasn't started to rain as of yet in Westchester, maybe we will be able to see the Lions in action.

The Ladies were able to get their game against the Bruins in today. The first half went to the Bruins 1-0. The Bruins controlled the ball for most of the half but the Lion defense was well organized and played well. It seems even without the new freshmen the team will make a nice transition replacing the soon to graduate seniors. The new Lion goalkeeper was calm and confident. She made some nice plays and will be a good anchor for as usual a strong defence. The offense helped out a lot tracking back on defense but made also some nice plays when the Lions moved forward. We almost scored on headers from two corners, one was well defended by the Bruin keeper and the other just sailed wide.
Just from watching the first half I was impressed with the play of the Lions. I know it's early, but lots of things are looking positive for the Lions and their chances next season.

Final score from the women's game 2-0 UCLA. I wasn't able to catch the 2nd half.
The men's game was played Sunday afternoon at LMU. It was just a spring game, off season and all. Something like what they sometimes call a "friendly" in soccer circles. But when you have a real game scenario with a referee and 300 plus screaming fans it didn't take long before the intensity started to boil over and it might as well have been regular season. UCLA scored in the first minute or so, I missed it, and immediately reminded and refocused the Lions why they were on the field.
The Lions held the Bruins scoreless the rest of the afternoon and left with a 1-1 tie. It was a tough match with the Lion defense frustrating the Bruins throughout the game and the offense showing lots of potential with ball control and scoring chances.
There was some rough play and after a couple of yellow cards each way a Bruin was ejected after his second yellow after taking a Lion down on the near sideline. The Bruin head coach seemed to be asking for relief from playing a man down but his request was initially ignored by the Lion coaching staff. The Lions scored soon afterward when they brought the ball into the penalty area and with what seemed like four or five quick passes slotted a goal past a flat footed keeper. It happened so fast, I'm not positive but I think Fernando Barba was the scorer.
The Bruins played the rest of the game at full strength and tested keeper Jack McCormack a couple of times in the second half but he fended off the attacks well. The Lions also had some chances but it all ended tied at one a piece.
The Lion team looks sharp and stronger than last year, they look stronger and motivated. Next season should be a good one.
The Bruins weren't at all happy with the result. After the game one of their assistants was overheard berating their players for their effort. He seemed to be unable to express himself verbally too well, he kept using variations of the same four letter words to make his points. My opinion is that the Lions are for real. And that the Bruins were lucky to come away with a tie, in a match up next year they won't catch the Lions napping at the start.
I liked that the team benches were moved in front of the bleachers. It makes for a much better atmosphere. It didn't restrict my view and I hope it continues.

This Saturday will be a busy day on Sullivan Field. The mens soccer team will face the Alumni about 0930/1030. The boys have a great side and are rounding into form this spring. This fall they should be ready to put it altogether for their best year ever. However, they may have their hands full with a Lion Alumni team that always features a boatload of skilled players and if I remember won last year against our team that was ranked as high as 15. It should be a great game. You BB fans are welcome too. You don't have anything planned Saturday morning anyway.
If the game is too early, show up at three and watch the Lion men play USD in the first of two regional rugby matches. At five Claremont meets Irvine in the second semi final. If you really are busy Saturday, the final is Sunday afternoon at one pm. That winner gets a bid to the nationals. Should be a great weekend for first class rugby! Go Lions!

The Alumni game was a good one to watch. The current team just had too much fire power for the alumni. Actually just a step or two quicker to the ball. Final score 6-1.
The alumni had some chances but they just couldn't put them away. Arturo Torres put the only goal in the net for the alumni.
That's it for the mens spring season, now summer with the club teams and probably late August till the next game for the Lion men.

The Lion women played USC this afternoon on Sullivan Field and came away with a 2-1 victory. Lots of good things to look forward to next season when the Lions play for real again. USC has a good team and are just a couple of years removed from winning the national championship so this was a good test. The Lions have always had a solid defense, now it is clear they also have lots of ways to score goals.
The Lion women controlled the game in the first half and could have easily scored more. USC played a physical game and the referee let them get away with more than a few hard fouls. LMU played hard and smart and beat the Trojans to the ball consistently.
In the second half the Lions seemed a bit fatigued, especially in the last twenty minutes and USC capitalized on a poor kick when the Lions were slow to react. The Lions played solidly albeit defensively for the rest of the game.
The womens team continues their improvement and looks poised for a great season next fall.
