The Lions are favored to win the race as handicapped by the WCC coaches. Great news and an incentive for the Lions to make it happen like Fanblade suggests.
As the coaches have probably reminded them, they are just slight favorites by a couple of points and every game in the WCC is a battle from the opening whistle. The championship won't be decided until the end of conference. It really only matters who is on top at the end that counts.
I'm in the Lions corner and as a fan believe they can win the title. But I know USD will say "we are the defending champs and you're going to have to prove it to us". Portland showed they can play with anyone in the country after a long run in the playoffs only to lose 1-0 to Virginia the tourney winner. Saint Mary's will also be tough.
You can't afford to overlook anyone in the WCC. Last year USF was favored to win again but aren't near the front in the poll this year. Looking past Gonzaga and Santa Clara would also be a big mistake.
We have a veteran team with some new players so I really like our chances. I think this is going to be a fun season for the Lions

An article at Top Drawer touts the WCC as one of the toughest conferences in the country. Having the greatest percentage of teams making the tourney. four of seven!
Also it has kind words mentioning Baca, Ocampo and McDaniel and LMU's position as the favorite to win the WCC.
