Our opener is Wednesday at 4pm. With the students back we should have a crowd for the first game.
SDSU played CSUN Friday night in Northridge in an exhibition. 0-0 tie.
SDSU had six ties and eleven OT games last year. The OT games also tied the NCAA record for ties in a season. It looks like they haven't changed too much. Our coaches and players got to see both of our next opponents with a short drive to the Valley. The Friday night drive north on the 405 isn't that bad is it?
Two tough tests to start our season. Every game is a big one. Go Lions!

Nice article on Mens Soccer at LMU Athletics previewing the season. Lions are in great position for an outstanding year. This could be the year for the WCC crown. Game time 4pm.
The Daily Breeze overlooked the Lions with a soccer preview of Division II CSUDH a couple of days ago. The Lions will have to make them take notice by their actions on the field. A dozen or more Lions hail from the South Bay as do the at least two of the coaches. With all the coverage the Breeze gives local sports and soccer LMU should be a obvious play for them.

Sounds like SDSU is a worthy opponent from your notes sullivanfieldfan. I guess we may get a good idea where the Lions are this year after this opener especially if we can play a dominant game.

What a come back - down 1-0 with about 2 minutes left and then to score and win in the first minute of overtime! Congrats Lions! I arrived late but the Lions were controlling the ball most of the time I saw play. SDSU scored on a good goal but a 1 in 100 shot of a foul call. A bit of rust was showing early for LMU but the team got it going when it really counted. Go Lions! Bring on BYU!

I wonder if BYU will field a mens soccer team? I'm sure they could field one if they wanted but with all those male football players I doubt it. We'll just have to watch our women beat up on them.

If you missed the soccer game you missed an exciting afternoon. The boys showed a lot of tenacity getting back to even after the Aztecs went ahead one zip.
The Lions kept pounding at the Aztecs for the last 30 minutes and had a number of chances that almost went in. As the clock wound down it looked like SDSU would hold out. Then Roger Downes found his way to a hard cross from Baca's free kick outside the eighteen. He put it in to tie with just over two minutes to go.
The Lions wasted no time in overtime putting the ball in net on their first possession. It was as if SDSU felt it inevitable and were exhausted by the end of regular time.
Lots of solid play from the Lions. Roger Downes returned to his spot at center back and scored a big goal. Logan McDaniel had a big game pushing forward time after time and linking up with Rafael Baca. The Lions controlled possession most of the game and shots on goal were lopsided in the Lions favor. Several new Lions found playing time, Christain Alvarado for one, came in late in the second half and almost had a goal only seconds later. The Aztec keeper made the save of the day sprawling to get a hand on the new number 8's shot to the far post.

Pretty exciting start to the season Go Lions! See You Sunday for two games!
Interesting info regarding CSUN. They tied SDSU 0-0 in an exhibition and lost tonight 2-0 to USD.

Am I missimg something or is it too much to ask the WCC website for conference soccer scores by noon the next day?
Anyway, Gonzaga lost giving up four goals to #20 UCI.

Seven yellow cards in Wednesday's game. At least three were for dissent and a couple other calls were confusing. On some obvious serious fouls against LMU the ref just played on as if nothing had happened. The linesman flagged Baca for offside from way across the field. From our closer view on the near sideline he was clearly onside. When he muttered a complaint to the center ref he earned a yellow. Logan certainly didn't get his moneys worth either for his yellow. The smartest card of the day was by Barba who grabbed a SDSU forward on a counter after we had tied the game and the clock was ticking down to overtime. Francisco got some good minutes subbing into the midfield.
It was fun to watch the celebration when Roger scored the tying goal. When he got over to the stands four or five MBB players hoisted him up high above the railing to a cheering crowd ala Lambeau field.

Great game today against a very physical and talented Cal State Northridge team. LMU has lots of weapons on offense as well as defense and showed its class today. Congratulations to the Lions for today's great win!

I agree a great win. The Lions are rolling.
The Lions had fun today and things went their way all afternoon. The Lions were way too fast and controlled the ball and the game from start to finish. Artur scored the first goal off of a rebound but his speed was evident all day long. He looks like a blurr out there sometimes. The Lions are playing with skill and speed everywhere on the field. The Matadors were on their heels all day long.
I really like the way the coaches have positioned our speed on the outside back line. It is taking the sting out of our opponents attack and setting the stage for our offense.
Phil was determined and would not be denied on our second goal. He really hammered that rebound in.
Csun was forced into committing 20 fouls to our 12 for the match. They didn't seem able to keep up with our pace of play. Roger Downes went down and was subbed out on a foul early in the first half that earned a yellow. Thankfully he was able to return for the second half. Vinnie Ocampo saw his first action of the season and played well in mid field and contributed to our first goal.
We didn't play error free though. We made a couple of mistakes but CSun was unable to take advantage. We were lucky a couple of times. Last years game was a loss but closely contested. This year we dominated the game.
