Running the gauntlet up the 405 to Westwood on a Friday afternoon can often be a trying experience, but if you have just a little experience and local surface street knowledge you can jump off the freeway and still make it to Westwood under an hour. It takes more than bumper to bumper traffic to keep LMU fans from making it to see the Lions play.
In this case the more was a failure on the part of UCLA to schedule referees for the initial match of their tournament between UCSB and LMU. After the match was canceled the staff in the ticket booth reluctantly refunded the price of admission. The public address announcer indicated parking fees would also be refunded, but when I got back to the parking structure the lot staff had already departed. No worries, after getting a refund for my ticket I felt I was lucky to get that.
I imagine there may be an opening in the UCLA Athletic Dept as early as Monday for scheduling staff. The finger pointing probably has already started. Have pity for the one without a chair when the music stops on this one.
Really it wasn't that bad for LMU, except for missing the chance to play UCSB it was just a short ride and a slight inconvenience for the Lions, but the Gauchos had at least a two hour ride each way.
This was embarrassing to be sure for UCLA but could you imagine if this happened to them in a higher profile program?
The announcer said LMU and UCSB would reschedule, we'll see if that can happen or not later.
Refs for the later Irish/Bruin game were apparently the only ones scheduled. After playing a tough match Friday, does this put both teams at a disadvantage for their games against fresh opponents on Sunday? I think so!
