Mornar playing very well. A driving left hand dunk and he's fouled.

As I was saying ... you can't zone the Bronco's. They were 9/12 and almost every one of them were wide open looks because there are simply too many holes for a team loaded with sharpshooters. The Bronco guards had some really open early looks that allowed them to get into a shooter's rhythm.
When Dunlap FINALLY went to a man-to-man, it made a difference. Not only did the wide open looks disappear, but the Broncos had some difficulties moving the ball.
On a positive note, Money has been MONEY. Great first half! Chase had a nice half maintaining control of the offense.
Now, in the second half, do we see a zone defense? Or man-to-man?

Money also has 7 rebounds. Only 2 turnovers!!! Who are these guys? Think we may come away happy. Santa Clara isn't likely to keep up the torrid 3 point shooting; especially since we decided to guard them.

Money now has 20 & 10; Evan is playing well and distributing the ball. Good game.

Announcers continuing to praise our improved team..in CMD we trust!!!
but seriously, i notice it too, with every game I am more convinced Dunlap knows what he is doing and has this program going in the right direction.
I'm drinking the koolaide for now

Lets not make Mike coach of the year just yet; even though I'll admit our losses are more palatable. But on the plus side we again foiled the odds makers, getting to be a habit. Unfortunate that Evan felt compelled to force up his last shot, really didn't have to. Under the present circumstances on last second shots, I would rather something be set up for Money. They will always converge on Evan and Monar has a nice outside shot, plus he is cool under pressure. Only 4-5 turnovers - that alone gets beaucoup kudos from me. Their guy Clark really smoked us, he must have been deceptively quick; I saw him catch Godwin and Money absolutely flatfooted a couple of times. Hope we can not only beat the spread Saturday but the Don's while we are at it.
Go Lions!

The Lions played pretty well for all but the last 20 seconds. With the exception of his last shot Evan played good team ball. The three point defense and poor foul shooting down the stretch left the Lions with no margin for error. SCU hit their last field goal attempt and all but 1 or 2 of their free throws to close out the game. That was the difference.
What I think is not disputable is the Lions continue to improve on a game by game basis. With that continued improvement more victories are coming this season.

Crap, sorry my lion friends. I thought for sure your boys were going to pull it out there at the end. And while nobody really gets excited over moral victories you guys definitely should stay excited for the future from what bits I was able to see. You guys have a young team and a first year coach that are going to learn a lot from close games like this and continue to improve. They continue to battle and sooner or later things will start clicking. Got to shake this one off as quickly as possible as they have another tough test in less then 48 hours. Best of luck!

For anyone wanting to know what happened, this is what happened. We shut down their hot handed three point shooting after the half, for the most part. Missed calls or horrible calls here and there, but it was the awakening of the student section in the final minutes of the game that probably messed up our crucial free throws, in addition to some extremely crucial missed calls in the final two minutes of the game. There were a few major moments where I could see a LOT going on that the refs failed to call. Dunlap seems to be a very levelheaded coach, and I enjoy watching him. Another important observation to note is the support of the team. For the last ten years, I have gone to the SCU game, and this might be one of the first years in a very long time that I have heard the players communicating with their teammates from the bench. I felt like if I yelled while they were yelling, I would mess that up, so I often stayed quiet so they could be a real team. Oh yes, and Evan was visibly stiff at the beginning of the game. I could see he still had his hip wrapped up when he lifted his jersey to wipe his face. If he weren't injured, I think that we very well could have beat Santa Clara, but he wasn't shooting nearly as much as he did last year or at the beginning of this year.

A good game from my perspective especially from money and Godwin who we don't expect so much from. Little things cost us late when we had a chance to pull ahead - Godwin's offensive goal tend on Hayes shot, missing 5 of 6 FTs until Money sank two and Evans forcing up a poor shot with under 15 seconds left - I'm sure Dunlap wanted a Time out there Evan wasn't 100% but played well otherwise There is hope!

You can already tell that CMD is MILES ahead of Good when it comes down to player development. Mornar, who was a second unit player his first few years, all the sudden has become perhaps our #1 weapon. Imagine what we'll look like with CMD's own recruits under his wing for a couple years.

I recall Mornar actually started several games as a freshman and more last year as a Jr. I can't give Dunlap the credit for Mornar gaining maturity and experience over the past 2 years. Besides, it was Good who recruited him in the first place. Sorry but, as much as we all want it to be so, there is as yet not enough evidence to support Mikes nomination as coach of the decade.

I suspect Money's improvement over last year is due mostly to the "off season" he spent playing in Europe.
It is way too early to assess CMD's performance. If we were challenging for one of the top spots in the WCC, you could put him in the category of "Miracle Worker." However, working over night miracles is not his style. CMD is a methodical guy. He wants to build HIS program his way. He was disappointed in the SCU loss because the guys kinda fell down when they needed to stand up. That failure to perform when it was needed is exactly what CMD is trying to overcome.
While it's way to early to give CMD a grade, there are some things that fall into the "I have concerns" category: 1. His first year recruiting class is showing very little. It's the second and third year classes that will tell us what our future is with CMD, but the first year class isn't building any hopes. 2. His inability to bring Devin Watson into the fold. I know, one player, one situation. It's hardly fair to judge him based on a single case. But why couldn't he reel in a kid after he had hired the kid's high school coach as an assistant? Again, I'm not condemning because there could be 10 other reasons why Devin chose USF. But I do wonder. 3. His insistence on forcing round pegs into square holes. By that I mean why stick with a zone designed to stop inside play against a team with no inside game but strong outside shooters? Why force a post- centric offense when we have no post offense capability? Like everyone else, at this point, all I can do is watch and hope for the best. It's going to take patience. Lots of patience.
