University of Pacific – Part II
Record: 7 - 15
WCC: 5 – 7
After a very mediocre pre-WCC season (2-8), Pacific surprised more than a few people with a WCC-opening win over Santa Clara in OT. Then went on to compile a respectable WCC record of 5-7, including wins over Portland and, recently, BYU. All this with two coaches, including head coach Ron Verlin, suspended since December 11 while a cooperative investigation with the NCAA stemming from allegations of academic misconduct is underway. Since then Mike Burns has led the team effectively during the WCC season.
The Tigers won the first game with the Lions in Gersten 60-58 in a back-and-forth contest. Jacko had not recognized his full potential yet during that game and scored only 8 points on 4-11 shooting (anomaly there) but did log 24 minutes of play while nursing 4 fouls. Brown led the Lions with 15 followed by Humphries with 12 and Tauch with 10 but the Lions shot poorly – 37% for the game including 23% from 3, while Pacific shot 43% from 3 (accounted for 12 point difference right there). Hate to dwell on it but Haney was 0-9 in that game with 21 minutes. Spiers took only one shot in the game and Tutu played only 7 minutes.
I relay all this as a rationale for optimism in Thursday night’s contest. I guess my implicit assumption is that Pacific is in the same place as they were that evening in Gersten, but that might be a bit naïve (nice way to say “stupid”).
In any case, we meet again this Thursday on the opponent’s court. It would be nice to get a win – I expect Pacific to be favored.
Gametime: Thursday, February 11, 7 pm in Stockton.
TV: TheW.tv – let’s hope the stream is one of the good ones.
Go Lions!
