ESPN had Saint Mary's chances very low to make the bubble. Some commentator said the problem was their low RPI playing such lowly teams as LMU. Whoo Hoo! We got talked about on ESPN! I don't think they should look at mid major's conference records. What was St. Mary's non conference RPI and SOS? If they beat up the little sisters of the poor that would be one thing. But they beat a few good teams during non conference.

"I was hoping common sense prevailed," said Randy Bennett, the coach of the small Catholic school near San Francisco. "Using common sense, we're one of the top 34 [at-large] teams. This was the best team we've ever had, so it's just disappointing to be in this situation."
That says it there for the Gaels fans but things are not always fair in college hoops! Us lions fans are well aware of that.

I think you are mixing up the SMC game with Westchesters high school game last week - that did happen (high school rule I guess) and Westchester never looked back. Or does that rule also apply in college? How childish if it does!

wrschnicke - It was talked about on the game thread - but yes in the WCC championship game Saint Mary's got a technical for someone doing a slam dunk before the refs were on the court during warm-ups. So, Gonzaga got two free throws to start the game and made one of them. Gonzaga started the game 1 to 0 and never looked back.
Alert2 - although I would love to see this as another example of SM being a bunch of "thuggish neanderthals" I don't think this is the example to hang your hat on. Seemed like an honest mistake made by a kid who didn't know all the rules. (same rule that I don't think any of us knew about either). On this one, I give them a pass.
And I think the rule has something to do with sportsmanship. Doing slam dunks during warm-ups could be seen as trying to intimidate the other team. Just a guess.

Omar Samham Dunked during pre-game warmups in the championship game against Gonzaga. They were assessed a technical foul and were down 0-1 before the game officially tipped off. Matt Bouldin only made 1-2 of those free throws.

The rule is pretty lame, but Omar didn't have it as bad as this kid in high school that I read about a few days ago. During warm ups of a play off game, this kid dunked the ball and broke the back board. His team had to forfeit the game! Now that is harsh!

No takers here. After last night's performance against Washington State, Paddy Mills stock went up in my eyes. Perhaps he will enter the NBA draft and move on. Another loss for the WCC. First, SD now SMC, who will carry the WCC ball except for Gonzaga? (LMU maybe?) Pass that Irish creme!
