Good article. Too many young men seem to think they are ready for the NBA (or is it the NBA money?). In my mind, Daye doesn't begin to compare with Adam Morrison for shooting talent or all around play and Morrison is struggling in his third year to find a role with some team - now the Lakers who will probable give him the best shot with their coaching skills and patience. ALthough I don't think he is ready - and may never be with his build - I agree with ironlions though in hoping some team picks Daye up and out of the WCC.

Also, I would take Paddy Mills over Daye anytime.

Seattle U who should become a member of the WCC down the road has just hired Cameron Dollar, long time UW Romar assistant as their head coach. He is a very good recruiter and should be able to draw some good players there. I hope we play them again this upcoming season. We have some pay back to shell out. sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=4073875

Nice article iron. But I think Max also has the "energy" of a 33-year old as well! uncurselmu - wisdom beyond your posting experience. Good bye Marco, Hello Garibay and Osborne - who hopefully can make inside layups from under the hoop. And we should have won that Seattle game - let it slip away - I guess our youth and lack of experience showed at the time we encountered Seattle. I'd like to see us take them on at Gersten early in the season.

Gonzaga will have an offical visit from former three star Kentucky commit GJ Vilarino this weekend. The talk on the Zags board is that they will be able to get the scholarship of if Daye goes to the league, or if the Bol Kong situation doesn't work out. Vilarino also has interest from VCU, Cincinnati, Georgia and Oregon. I would rather face this kid then Kong or Daye.

GJ Vilarino has committed to GU. He is a three start on scout and rivlas and a 88 ranking on ESPN. A very nice pick up for the Zags. This could mean that Kong's visa issues never worked out or Daye will go to the draft.

Info on Vilarino - Ironlions is way ahead of ESPN on this news! 5'11" - much better than Daye
G.J. Vilarino | PG
Hometown McKinney, TX High School McKinney High School Position rank Point Guard # 31 Height 5'11" Weight 160 lbs. Evaluation August, 2008: This quick lefty has good speed and quickness with the ball. Although thin and wiry, Vilarino is fearless and competes at all times. He pushes the ball in transition and can finish with speed to the rim with his left hand. He runs the offense in the half court and has a pass first mentality. A good athlete for his size that can penetrate and kick but has trouble finishing against the trees inside. He is a good decision maker and puts pressure on the defense by always probing and looking for an opportunity to create. Vilarino has a heavy left hand dribble that can slash to the rim when the play breaks down. He's an average shooter at best that is most affective from about 15-17 feet. Vilarino needs to invest some time on his shooting especially from three point land. His form is not bad but his jumper is not where it needs to be yet. Strength is also a factor, Vilarino needs to hit the weight room in order to help him finish in the lane and defend taller point guards. On defense he has very good foot speed and lateral quickness that allows him to stay in from of the ball. With improved strength and shooting along with attacking more going to his right, his game will go to the next level.

Wow the person that wrote that evaluation on the shooting guard has the intelligence of a fourth grader. So many mispelled words it was hard to read. And thats on espn?

ironlions - what is the "APR" issue with Pepperdine? I don't know what APR is. Does this have to do with academics? Thanks

Found something to answer my own question but Pepperdine is not mentioned: sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4147127Maybe related to freshman star guard Bell from LA as someone noted in another posting? Academic Performance Rating. Centenary, Tenn.-Chattanooga penalized Comment Email Print Share Associated Press INDIANAPOLIS -- Centenary's men's basketball team and Tennessee-Chattanooga's football squad didn't make the grade with the NCAA and it cost them a chance to compete for a national championship next season. Those teams became the first to be banned from postseason play because of poor Academic Progress Rate scores. Jacksonville State's football team, which is appealing a postseason ban, could join them. A decision is expected within six weeks. NCAA president Myles Brand said Wednesday's announcement sends a message to the nation's college teams: Repeatedly failing to make grades comes at a heavy cost. "I think it is a watershed because it shows the depth and severity of the penalties for schools that cannot come into compliance with academic performance," Brand said during a conference call. "Think back as a mode of comparison to when we have recruiting infractions, and we withhold them from postseason play, that's a big deal." Consider, too, that the NCAA has backed away from handing down postseason bans for rules infractions over the past decade, a move that made Wednesday's announcement more emphatic. It was a tough day for Centenary. While the NCAA was making its announcement, Summit League commissioner Tom Douple said the Gents would be banned from playing in the season-ending conference tournament, too. The scores are calculated based on data from the fall semester in 2004 through the spring semester in 2008. Each athlete receives one point per semester for remaining academically eligible and another point each semester for remaining at that school or graduating. A mathematical formula is used to correlate a final team score, with 1,000 points being perfect. Teams that fall below 925 annually can be subjected to immediate penalties. Those consistently falling below 900, such as Centenary and Tennessee-Chattanooga, face harsher sanctions. Next year, schools with four straight years of poor scores could face the NCAA's most severe penalty, restricted Division I membership for the entire athletic department. Centenary coach Greg Gary, who just completed his first season at the school and lost five players after being hired, is trying to turn things around with a stronger emphasis on academics.

Chad Ford of ESPN rates this year's NBA draft prospects:
Austin Daye #20 - lottery/first round Patty Mills #22 - Lottery/first round - ahead of Darren Collison Heyvelt #35 - late first round Pargo - #74 - late second/not drafted
Discussion on Daye indicates his game has shortcomings including lack of strength. Maybe he will be gone from Gonzaga next year based on his potential and overall skills but will probably be a bit of a project for some team in the short term.

That too. Next year should be a great year. I am really excited to see the talent coming in from the Lions and the Zags.... A lot of people on the Zags board are picking LMU as its sleeper team. I would have to agree with that assessment interesting tidbit
