The situation involving how the interim coach, became the interim coach maybe a little different. But reports are even if Arizona wins the National Championship, the Arizona interim coach has no shot at the job.
But at LMU they gave the interim coach a 3-4 year contract BEFORE the season was even over.
Interesting.

Arizona is offering a salary around 2 million a year and chartered flights. At LMU we can offer a ride to the Bridge Cinema De Lux on the Lion Express. AZ really seems to want to land a big name coach...I believe Art Moreno the billionaire owner of the Angels is a alumni, and will make things happen financially. The names I have heard rumored are Jay Wright of Villanova and Slick Rick Pittino.

No...they offered Mike Dunlap ( a prick ) the LMU alumni the interim job but he turned it down because he wanted it as a full time gig. So they went with Russ Pennell who just a few years ago was radio announcer at ASU.

The point here is that LMU isn't making smart decisions. LMU is like a woman in her early 40's, who has never been married and has no kids, but is trying to find Mr. Right and start having kids. So in her rush to get married and have kids, she keeps going out with losers. She ignored the red flags of her last guy (Bayno) and instead of waiting and being picky about her next boyfriend, she starts a relationship with the first guy who shows interest in her (Good).

We'll see. I was bummed about Good at first too but LMU's tried doing it the "right" way only to have it blow up in our faces 3 times.
Hire a sucessful lower division coach, fail Hire an assistant coach from a quality upper division school, fail Hire a glitzy expensive coach with NBA connections, fail
Maybe it isn't such a bad idea to just go with the boring, stable, reliable, grouchy antics of Good. So far I'm happy he's kept Bayno's pieces together and his recruiting looks better than we've had in the past.

Good has kept these kids motivated when some teams would have thrown in the towel and I think the players ended the season on an upbeat note. Maybe Good's seriousness started right after Bayno left when Good threw Teel out of practice and sat him on the bench at the start of the Notre Dame game. Yes, he seems grouchy but if he comes across like a loving grandfather to the kids in the end and keeps the team in tact, he and LMU will be OK. Let's give him a fair shot - he has a winning record and good staff behind him.

A little different situation. We have a good amount of high quality players if everyone from the staff that recruited left. Therefore we hired Good to keep that talent in tact. I think it was a good move. Arizona on the other hand would have had most of their talent leave no matter what because the were not going to be playing for "the" lute olsen. I think there was communication between our recruits and current players to see if they would like to go through the whole search again, or if they wanted to play for Good. Definitely the right decision for the short term, and we will see through recruiting if it is the right decision for the long term

This is my initial post. I have been reading your posts daily for months. I do not intend to post frequently, but will be reading yours frequently. I watch LMU home games on computer and listen to LMU road games on radio. But, I do know more about the current LMU basketball program than anyone on this site. I have been moved by some of the recent posts on this thread to respond. If you are true LMU fans, you have no idea how fortunate you are to have Max Good as your head coach. Totally unbeknownst to you he has demonstrated an amazing commitment to the LMU program and its players since the season ended. I believe some really good news is forthcoming about this weekends recruiting visits. Please show your appreciaton for the efforts of Coach Good and the other coaches.

lmuguy -
Welcome aboard. Any insight you have into the program is most welcome.
Don't worry too much about the perceived negativity toward Coach Good. I don't feel that anyone is questioning his ability or his dedication. The lingering debate is really just focused on the "long term contract" that he got after the Bayno fiasco. Some feel that we should have gotten him on a shorter contract to see how it all works out.
However, I personally, don't care about the contract debate. If the AD wants to make a change in a couple of years then the only thing about the contract that matters is how much the coach gets paid to walk out the door.
However, it is my thought that Coach Good could have easily been a contender for our Head Coach position last year if we weren't distracted trying to get a "big name" coach. Good has won big time on the D2 stage (which is more about coaching then it is big time players with natural ability). He has been around a long time and has the contacts that come with it. And he has a passion for the game and for winning. As others have said, a school like LMU has limited options when it comes to picking a head coach. In the end of the day it's a bit like tossing darts and I have no problem with our dart landing on Good.
Every person who has interaction with him likes him (including myself) and the players seem to like him. He may not be young and flashy and "sexy" - but we have tried those in the past without much luck. And lets not forget the upside of the Bayno situation was the amazing assistant coaches he brought into our tent. (Good, on his own, may not have been able to get that level of talent.) Mark my words - in 5 or 10 years at least one of our assistants will be a big name on his own.
So, in the end of the day we seem to have ended up with a solid and proven (but not flashy) coach with a big time group of assistants. What's not to like?
Sure we could have gone fishing again after Bayno left. But, I think it's just some delusional dream that a "big name" coach was just waiting for us to call and make a low-ball offer. I think it could have been a huge waste of our time and it would have shaken out some of our current roster (who I really like). We have a real good fish in Coach Good and I'm glad we got him.
Go Lions - It's All Good.

Hi lmuguy, good to hear from long time readers-first time posters. I enjoyed reading the comments on this thread. I don't think many LMU fans were popping champagne when Good was announced HC. Since then the athletic department has also been very quiet in rolling Good out into the public and has been more tight lipped in general after all the Bayno extravaganzas. But Good did a really fine job to end this season that for all intents and purposes was headed to complete disaster (injuries galore and a MIA Head Coach). I think ultimately this was our best move and sort of only move that could have been made. It would have been tragic to hire a new coach from out-of-the-blue only to have the entire team fall apart and us start from scratch yet again. The program would officially be in a state of perpetual disrepair. At least now Good has been able to institute a level of stability that will allow us to rebuild quicker. He also is a tested veteran coach who if not for geographic reason would be high on our coaching search list if we were to be on the market. We are not far off from winning a good deal of games.

Why not keep your options open? If LMU does feel that Good is the right person for the job, they certainly could have signed him to a contract in March/April, right? Nobody was beating down the door to sign him back in Jan. So why rush into signing him?
By keeping your options open maybe somebody better may have turned up? If nobody better came up, LMU could still have signed Good.

If they did not sign him, many of the players would have bolted, AND we would have been unable any more talent because of questions at the head coach position. Good has shown to be a great x's and o's coach and now with the commitment of Quincy Lawson he has shown to be a good recruiter as well.

Titan,
I think holding off on giving Good the job would have been a dangerous decision. You are right, a bigger name coach may have come along - but that doesn't mean it would have been a better coach for our situation and lambdachi hit it on the head - who knows what damage could have been done in the meantime.
When we have millions to spend on a coach the way Arizona does - then we can afford to take a sit back and wait approach. Short of that, I think it was the right choice without question. (In my mind the only debate is how long of a contract he got - and even that debate is a bit pointless after the fact.)
Great news on Lawson!
