Puerto Rico edged out by Greece yesterday in a high scoring game - 107-98. Kevin was held to 5 points and 4 rebounds in 24 minutes. Greece shot 58% from the field including 53% from 3-point range. Next up is Angola who Greece pounded 101-58. Canada whipped Syria 99-53 with Arop scoring 11 and pulling down 4 rebounds, Olynyk scored 10 with 8 boards. Ty Nurse, the subject of some exchanges here in the Lion's den, had 5 points on 1 for 5 shooting. www.newzealand2009.fiba.com/pages/eng/fe/09/u19men/p/gid/3/grid/A/rid/6972/game.html

Puerto Rico dominates Angola 86-49. Our man Kevin Young scored 11 points on 5 for 5 shooting with 5 boards in 19 minutes. Puerto Rico advances to the next round and plays France on Monday, USA on Tuesday and Egypt on Wednesday. USA will be a tough game, should beat Egypt and toss up with France. France is 2-1 with their two wins over Egypt and Iran. PR probably needs to win two out of three games to advance to the quarter finals.

Rosario, hero of PR's game with France, is a shooting guard with Rutgers. During Freshman year averages 16.2 ppg in 32.5 minutes per game.
From ESPN:
Mike Rosario | SG ESPNU 100 Rank: #16 (Class of 2008) Rated 96 Hometown Jersey City, NJ High School St. Anthony High School Position rank Shooting Guard # 5 Height 6'3" Weight 180 lbs.
Evaluation January, 2008: Rosario has unbelievable range on his jumper. He frequently connects from well beyond the 3-point line. He has a nice, quick release on his jumper and expends very little wasted energy on getting the shot off. Rosario relies a little too much on the 3-point shot at times, but he ranked as the best shooter in this event (2008 Hoophall Classic). He does a great job of staying within the team concept and not disrupting the offense in lieu of getting his own shots. Given his consistent jumper, Rosario should find a number of opportunities to score at Rutgers next season.
Rosario is a big time point guard and a great catch for Rutgers (verbal). He has a tremendous feel for the game, works harder than anyone on the court and is a flat out winner. He is the consummate floor general who can also attack the rim. His outside shot continues to improve. The term "gym rat" was invented for this kid.
Our Kevin is getting great experience playing with team mates of this caliber.

Thank you fanblade - I tried to post some photos from the FIBA site but it seems you need special privledges to post pictures. I copied the JPEG file and tried to paste but nothing happened. The shots of the Puerto Rico-France game are great.

Puerto Rico could not keep up with Team USA losing 82-61. Kevin Young had 8 points and 3 boards in 20 minutes. PR star Rosario was held to 11 points and shot only 28%. USA used balanced scoring to dominate this game. Next up Egypt - a PR win should carry them to the quarter finals.

Puerto Rico, as expected, beat Egypt 99-71. The easy game gave the PR coach a chance to distribute playing time to all players on the squad. Kevin had 11 points, 2 steals and 2 boards in 17 minutes. The PR star, Rosario, played only 20 minutes but poured in 22 points on 50% shooting. Ironically, his percentage from 3 point range is better than his percentage from 2 points range! PR should advance to the quarter finals starting Friday. Great experience for Kevin, playing team ball and learning to win in pressure situations. His confidence will be enhanced next year with the Lions as he discovers his potential as a team player.

Tomorrow PR plays Croatia and USA plays Canada. The winners play each other as do the losers. Croatia is one of the better teams in the tournament so if both PR and Canada lose, Kevin will get a chance to play against the ace Gonzaga recruits Arop and Olynyk in the consolation bracket. May be interesting - PR can handle Canada. If PR wins, we have to take on the USA which has mucho talent.
