At the beginning of the season it was very hard to size up these very young lions. Now that we have 8 games under our belt the strengths and weaknesses are more clear. We are now 2-6. What "grade" would you give the lions so far. Obviously we haven't been winning much but I'm not sure it that was expected given our situation. So grade them based on how they have preformed according to your expectations. What do you see as the strengths and weaknesses of the team so far? Can things be turned around. I'm still very optimistic but I'll let you decide. Here is a peek at the last half of the non-conference season. 12/05/07 at Long Beach State 12/08/07 at Boise State 12/15/07 at UC Riverside 12/19/07 vs. Mississippi State 12/22/07 vs. Wagner 12/30/07 vs. Sam Houston State 01/03/08 at BYU 01/07/08 at Cal State Bakersfield

I'd have to give an Incomplete so far (sorry if that's a copout). Look, we have 3 upperclassmen on our roster. We don't have a set rotation, nor do we have a proven go-to guy (OJ, Deadwiler are getting there, though).
I said before the year started that 2007/8 wasn't going to be a bastion year for this program. 08/09 better be, or else RT should be updating his resume.
Having said that, this team has the chance to grow as a unit throughout this year. I'm fine with moral victories until conference play: From then on out (and I'm not talking about just this year), we should be taking a critical eye to this program.

It seems to me like the university needs to take a critical look at what it is doing to help these coaches win... It has been far too long since this team was really successful. It seems like tention as done a good job while he has been here and has hit some rough luck. Almost making the Tourney his first year, the freak injuries last year, and this year is just growing pains

I have to say I am a bit disappointed in the start of the season. We have suffered some embarrassing loses at home where it was quite easy to question the desire of our players and coaches to compete for 40 minutes. Turnovers have been horrible and the team cannot consistently break the press. Athough there has been some bright spots, there have been many more rough spots along the road.

2-6 is better than scratching but we should be 4-4 by now. Still searching for a solid PG, need to make shots and plays on the floor effectively. Ziri, Deadwiler, OJ, TD, Deric, have done well. Would like to see Brandon Walker develop. He's had some bright spots. Still too early for a grade.

My prediction for the rest of non-conference game.
12/05/07 at Long Beach State W. We have to. 12/08/07 at Boise State L. 12/15/07 at UC Riverside L. I've watched them play, their defense is better than ours. 12/19/07 vs. Mississippi State L 12/22/07 vs. Wagner W. A 17 feet mid-range jumper from OJ to seal the game. 12/30/07 vs. Sam Houston State L 01/03/08 at BYU L 01/07/08 at Cal State Bakersfield L. Simply not feeling good about this game.
so that's 2-6 for the rest of non-conference schedule. *O*!! I must have made a mistake or two somewhere!!

I hope you made some mistakes in there. But I should say the grades could be premature, this isn't an indictment on the season for sure. USF did miserably last season during their non-conference schedule but rebounded okay during the regular season.
I think we pick up wins at UCR, CSUB, and sneak an upset at BYU ... ok maybe not BYU maybe SHSU. I think the lions may have something cooking.

Up to now we seem to beating our selves with our massive amount of turn overs. If we cut those down I think we can win a lot more games.
Go Lions

What I hope is that the team learns from these mistakes. O Johnson is going to become a hell of a player. Haven't been about to watch any games, but have been checking the stats. Turnovers will happen with any team without a true go-to guy or PG.
