Getting Inside
The 83-50 loss to Gonzaga on Feb. 11 was Loyola Marymount's 20th defeat this season, the seventh time since 1993 the Lions have lost 20 games or more.
Loyola Marymount has struggled ever since winning the conference title in 1990, when Hank Gathers, Bo Kimble and coach Paul Westhead were in their final seasons at LMU.
The Lions are young this season, but there is no hint they are making significant progress. With five games remaining before the conference tournament, the Lions still have a chance to finish fifth in the eight-team conference, but they could also finish last. Based on their games Feb. 9 and 11, the latter seems more likely than the former.
Loyola Marymount has not won a conference road game yet, and the 11-point loss at Portland was particularly difficult to take because the Lions had beaten Portland earlier in the season.
Loyola Marymount took care of the ball better than it usually does, but it was unable to make plays when it mattered most.
The Lions led by three points with just over 13 minutes left, but they converted only one field goal over the next eight minutes and found themselves behind by nine points.
Loyola Marymount stayed close against Gonzaga for a while, too, and even outrebounded the Bulldogs for the game. But the Lions allowed the Bulldogs to shoot 68 percent in the second half, leading to a blowout.
Coach Rodney Tention has tried just about everything. Ten players have started at least two games this season, and Tention abandoned his man-to-man defense to try a zone against Gonzaga. The zone worked for a while, but when the Bulldogs started hitting shots in the second half, the Lions did not have enough firepower to keep up.
Strategy and Personnel
Freshman Orlando Johnson had just five points and one rebound in the Feb. 11 loss to Gonzaga.

GAME REVIEW
Loyola Marymount 72, San Francisco 67
Portland 74, Loyola Marymount 63
Gonzaga 83, Loyola Marymount 50
GAME PREVIEW
Vs. St. Mary's, Saturday, Feb. 16
Vs. Santa Clara, Monday, Feb. 18
Vs. Pepperdine, Saturday, Feb. 23
IN FOCUS
The game against Portland may be Loyola Marymount's best chance for another win, and if the Lions commit just 12 turnovers, as they did in the win over Portland earlier this season, they should end up sweeping Portland. Orlando Johnson had 11 rebounds in the first meeting, and he will need to do similar work on the boards this time.
ROSTER REPORT
--Orlando Johnson had 304 points as of Feb. 12, the sixth-best single-season total for a Loyola Marymount freshman. His 123 rebounds ranked fifth in history among LMU freshmen.
--Freshman F Tim Diederichs had a career-high seven rebounds against Gonzaga.
--Chris Kanne scored two points against Gonzaga, giving him six for the season. A student manager as a freshman, Kanne made the team as a walk-on the next season. He is scheduled to graduate in May with a degree in business law.
Notes & Quotes
--Loyola Marymount has a weird kind of consistency in its conference losses. None of its first seven WCC defeats was closer than 11 points, but four of them were by 23 points and a fifth was by 24 points.
--As of Feb. 12, Loyola Marymount was averaging 19.0 turnovers per game. Only seven of the 341 Division I teams were turning the ball over more than that.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"We did a better job of taking care of the ball, but we did not take care of the ball in key moments." -- Loyola Marymount coach Rodney Tention after his team committed six of its 14 turnovers in the final seven minutes of the Feb. 9 loss to Portland.
