I have way too much free time, so here goes with my season grades for the team:
Terron Sutton, Brad Sweezy-INC. Shirted. Hope theyll contribute next year.
Max Craig-C+ Gave us some solid minutes as a freshman, but really only took up space in the key. Needs to develop offensive game, and a nasty streak (although he did get t'd up in the nmsu game).
Shawn Deadwiler-B- Came into games with energy, and definitely wasnt hesitant to take his shot. Needs to realize that at the D-1 level, he can't go in the lane with those floaters (they were swatted, with authority, on multiple occasions). Like his game though.
Mason Maynard-B+ You really couldn't ask for more from a freshman. Came into games, and gave the entire team energy from is hustle. Probably needs to bulk up to be more effective in the paint.
Corey Counts-B I like this kid. Solid back-up point. Hit some big shots in key situations. If he cuts down on turnovers, will be an effective player next year.
John Montgomery-B+/A- Speaking of cutting down on turnovers...made a huge leap from last year to now. Stopped playing scared and started to take charge of the team. Believe me, I was one of his biggest detractors earlier in his career, but he helped our team tremendously.
Jon Ziri-D Expected so much more from him this year. Not sure if he was in coach's doghouse or what, but minutes diminshed late in the year. Seemed to drift during games. Portland game was a microcosm of his season: 2 missed free throws, airballed three, and defensive liability.
Derick Grubb-C Key double-double against usd, and was big in the comeback against nmsu. Other than that, nada. One of the worst defenders I've seen in the post. As a fifth-year senior, looked to be one of the more clueless players in terms of scheme, etc.
Marko Deric-B Came on strong during conference play, although majority of his points came when matty was doubled. Will be interesting to see his growth next year.
Damian Martin-B- Here's where I was conflicted. Was DPOY, but averaged 5.1 ppg. Just like certain players are a defensive liability, martin was an offensive one. Teams could afford to drop back, as he wasn't going to take the shot. Still, a good leader on the floor and fills the stat sheet in other categories.
Adoyah Miller-B+ Developed into a primary option after Worthy went down. Unbelievable growth considering he didnt even play last year. Carried us offensively at some points. Just don't ask him to dunk it.
Matty Knight-A What else can you say. First-team WCC (again,) leader of the team, double-double every night.
Brandon Worthy-A Wouldve been WCC POY if Karl Jr. didnt take out his leg. Kind of had a "what could have been career"-Injury in 2004 led to Aggers' firing, 4th foul in 2006 WCC Champ. led to the collapse, and we were a possible tourney team until his acl snapped. Kind of a snakebitten player, although injuries were a result of the fearless way he plays.
Coach Tention-C We can blame Worthy's injury, but I expceted more from this team. Shots of him frustrated/exasperated on the bench against portland were telling. If players still arent buying into his system after two years, then something is amiss. Needs to make bigger splash recruiting, and post an above .500 record in next two years or else he's gone.
Just my $.02

Great run down LMUTEX.
As you pointed out under Coach Tention's run down...I'm a little worried about our recruiting. Granted we didn't get to see Sweezy and Sutton play. Orlando Johnson is going to great for us but over all I’m not too impressed with our recruits yet. In general I think we could be doing better. The boys in Malibu have an amazing recruiting class next year with two top 100 recruits (they are however academic liabilities)
I’m hoping we step it up and get some really good JC recruits this summer.
Side note, Aggers was an amazing recruiter- Wes,Worthy,Knight- ALL WCC, Doh Miller, Charlie Brown, Sherman Gay, Martin-Defensive POY, Dustin Brown…Tention better step up.
Go Lions!

I will chip in my $.02 as well.
Max Craig: C Need more speed and better movement around the basket.
Shawn Deadwiler: B- Great speed. Need to develop rainbhow shot to avoid blocks.
Mason Maynard: B- Had a good game against USD, that's about it.
Corey Counts: B+ A late season surprise. Not bad considering he was a walk-on last season. However, need to work on cutting down turnover.
John Montgomery: B Too many turnovers and missed too many open 3's. For a guy his size, he needs to be deadly behind the arc.
Jon Ziri: D Tempted to give him an F. That says it all.
Derick Grubb: B Gave us some solid minutes early in the season. Need to avoid early foul trouble.
Marko Deric: B- Had a nice late season surge. Likely to be on starting lineup next year.
Damian Martin: B Not a scorer but does everything else fine.
Adoyah Miller: A- Really step up when Worthy went down. If it wasn't for him, we would be at the bottom of WCC.
Matty Knight: A- Our best big man in recent years. Needs to show more leadership.
Brandon Worthy: A Very deserving of an A regardless of the injury.
Coach Tention: B- A step-back from last season if you ask me, but it's been a difficult season for all of us really.

Nice writeups. This season has been a mixed bag. I hope Tention can get something working. His time is running out. A lot happened this season that was out of his control but the complete collapse midseason was just out of control. We'll need to see how these recruits work out. Even though expectations were so high (and rightfully so) the season was not a complete disaster. I mean it looked like for awhile that the lions would drop ALL conference games but we ended up sweeping #2 Santa Clara and beating Pre-Shroomgate Gonzaga, a feat that hadn't been done in 8 meetings. I also cannot get over Worthy's "three" against NMSU . I think Pepperdine is getting some hot recruits due to the new ' celebrity' coach. Whether his system will work in Malibu is a big question mark. That style can't be replicated anywhere.

Confused about Aggers, was it just that his x's and o's didn't exist because the players look good but our record was abysmal during his tenure.

I've got to agree with Max Craig. Mostly just took up space but had a few standout moments and I believe lifted us with some big FTs during tight games. I'd give Maynard a C-, was not impressed with this kid unfortuntely. BUT he saved the day (along with Grubb) as the unlikely hero for our big win over USD. I think overall though he is too impatient on the court. Too much energy not enough focus, chalk it up to his young age. If he could settle, watch out. Deadwiler, spot on there. Hasn't figured out this is D1 bball in a competitive conference. You just can't throw it up in front of a 6'7 defender and not have the ball knocked aside. He also needs to learn how to handle the ball better under pressure. I'd love to see him as a possible outside threat if he can work on his 3point. Counts, he's athletic and has some confidence. A ways to go before he'll be a starter but I like how he improved as the season went on. I cannot wait until November.

Looking forward to next year...
Deadwiler...in every game I saw him play he would take it to hoop and try to float one in, but instead his shot would get swatted to the bleachers. This started this summer when I was watching him play pick up...he took it to the rack and JZ blocked his shot it big time. He needs to learn out to use his speed to an advantage
Maynard I think he can turn in to a decent player but man does he have to hit the weight room and IN-and-OUT.
Max Craig... He needs to go to big man camp. He has potential but he needs to put in a lot of work this summer.
Counts...I'm a big fan of Counts. He does need to cut down on turn overs but he is a big asset for us.
Deric...He did show some offensive skills but I'm not a big fan. I think he is kind of softy. He has to live up to the toughness that Damo and Matty show.
Damo...His D is amazing, but he needs to be at least a little bit of an offensive threat. Aren’t lefties supposed to be good shooters?!?!?!
Ziri …What a let down year. Work hard in the summer, work on the shot can come back to for a stellar senior year.
Coach T and staff…Go out and recruit like crazy. With our campus, our location, and LMU girls there is no reason we shouldn’t be getting top recruits. Gersten is a bit run down but the Zags has a top #25 team in the old Kennel which has been described at a tin can.
Go Lions!

Good input but make sure you guys do your scouting work before grading.
Max Craig - young and adjusting
Deadwiler - injured early in the year, should have red shirted due to knee sugery. Will be an impact player in 2007-2008. No a huge learning curve here, just needs to get healthy. Forced into action early due to B. Worthy's season ending injury.
Maynard, played hard gave energy but needs to bulk up.

Thanks for the insight. I would really like to see Craig and Deadwiler blossom this coming year. I do not doubt Craig will improve now he's put a season in and I didn't know about Shawn's injury. I think some opponents will underestimate the lions (I don't mind though!).

Deadwiler might have been injuried but I got sick of seeing his floaters in the lane blocked into the stands.
Go Lions.

ironlionss///Are you a Lion fan? Man I'd hate to be the one sitting next to you. The kid is young and was injured and you say this.
GO YOUNG Lions next year. Here they signed a JUCO Guard for DAMO also. Good job Coaching Staff.
Oh Yeah, ironlionss if you have these type of expectations (IMMEDIATE RESULTS) then maybe give up your FAN honors. We are proud of the Mighty Lions and what they acheived this year of ups and downs due to injuries etc......

He is just speaking his mind. We are all true lions fans here. Period.
I am not so much irritated to see deadwiler's shot gets blocked. He is a freshman he needs to develop, that's all. I personally like his confidence and defnitely think he could make a big impact to our team next year.

AACoach. Please don’t question my dedication to the Lions. As you can see I have 151 post on this board so when you come on here with your two posts, and ask if I’m a fan its just silly. I have missed 3 home games in the last 10 years, this is including going to every single game during the Coach Bradley area. I’m very happy to have Deadwiler on our roster and but I’m just reiterating something that was discussed on this board during the season. Often Deadwiler would take the ball into the lane and get blocked big time. I even saw this during pick up games last summer, where JZ swatted his shot into the bleachers. It is great that Deadwiler played injured…that shows a lot of heart. Damo and Matty did it too durning their freshman years. I’m just hoping he has a good summer and develops other wise he will be watching Brandon and Isaiah take up his minutes. Here are some nice photos… I have done over the years…I hope I live up to your idea of a Lions fan.

As the one who started this thread, I guess I should throw in my opinion.
Let's see aacoach: Me- "Mason Maynard-B+ You really couldn't ask for more from a freshman. Came into games, and gave the entire team energy from is hustle. Probably needs to bulk up to be more effective in the paint."
You- Maynard, played hard gave energy but needs to bulk up.
So it's not exactly as if you're providing paradigm-shifting analysis of our season, especially considering that I came to games in an, how should we say, altered state.
Look, we want Deadwiler to succeed. It's not like we said the kid sucks, just that he needs to better utilize those floaters a la Tony Parker. Whether or not he was hurt makes no difference.
If you're looking for all-positive analyses after a 13-18 season, you've come to the wrong place. We're LMU fans, but we haven't drank the kool-aid. Yet.

Got word of the JUCO on campus no confirmation from the basketball experts on campus so I have to leave it at hearsay at this point.
I'm all about positive reinforcement not negative. I sat in the stands this year and heard so much negative I could not stand some of it. Coaches are getting out and getting good quality character kids, good players that need to be taught and given some time for growth. Some tough times this year and I just cannot stand to hear negatives when they (players) are working there butts off.
I watch pros go in the tank from negaitive feedback. If we are all teaching lets give feedback but in a manner that is true but comes across positive. Coaches know when to let a kid go if they can't cut the mustard let them do their jobs. Not looking for koolaid just a positive way to criticize without destroying young adults as they grow into men/student athletes.
