UCSB is improved this year. They beat UNLV on the buzzer and will be riding on momentum. They are ranked #18 in midmajor top 25 (Gaels btw moved to #5, GU dropped to #2). Favored to win TBW. We need to pull a big upset. go lions

Don't worry if your fans don't show up, the Gaucho fans are coming in force to fill up the empty seats!

If they are really serving beer in the parking lot pre-game then your beer revenues should at least be double what they are expecting. It could be even more, someone in the athletic department told me beer sales are triple the usual sales when UCSB comes to town.

That would be from the UCI athletic dept. where the Gauchos visit every year.

We've got a good record against UCSB historically. Let's keep this trend alive and pull out another homecoming stunner. Will they let old fogies into the garden?

Good signs from this game. Deadwiler was a star and we BEAT THE SPREAD! Ok, enough of moral victories but the crowd was good and the lions did well. We had this one in our claws but just came up a little short. Way too many turnovers like usual but we can work on that.

Turnover kills. We got almost no production from the big men.
Shawn was a baller tonite though!

A winnable game. Shawn carried us but his many turnovers also hurt. Our post players are not very good at all. A valiant effort but if we keep making such a large number of turnovers we are going to lose a lot of games this year.
Go Lions!

3500 attendance...imagine how nice it would have been if we could send this crowd home with a victory tonite...
Shawn has no excuse to have eight turnovers tonite. But at least he tried to make it up with his scoring.
I don't blame Tim for having a subpar game, he just didn't get enough touches. Our guards can't make an entry pass to him.
QT, it seems like the best way to limit his turnover number is by reducing his playing time. That hurts.
OJ....I love him to death but he hasn't shown the willingness to carry this team on his back. He had a difficult time getting his shots off so far this season and was a liability defensively.
JZ, awesome. Period. He needs to work on his consistency but Coach made the right decision to start him.

I've been waiting for about three games for one of these post LMU.
LMU,
First we competed and see a future with this team and we've recruited correctly.
I disagree and agree with some of your points. Turnovers can be fixed but to say our guards can't get it in the post is not a true statement. Also we know we are going to be pressed or trapped but in the 1st 4 mins of the games the players are either running the wrong sets by not coming back to the ball to help or the offense doesn't fit the players on the court.
We can't bring the ball up the court 15 times in the first half and as a team not help so we can break the press and traps. This will eliminate turnovers. I watched our players tonite in the first 4 minutes not come back to help, either sit in the post or along the three point line on the baseline while the guard is trying to get by three people. They can't make that pass its almost impossible so they try to dribble through it and that fails.
Second, young players have to make mistakes in order to win down the stretch. I would like to see who we define as our go to guys and who we are going to design plays for. Just like the TV commentator said, its the next step for this young lions team. Is it OJ and Deadwiler, is it Tim and OJ, is it OJ and JZ and what are the roles for all players when they come on the court.
Although 8 turnovers are horrible so is an team average of 22 a game by all of our players. I put the first 4 in this game on the team not a player, there needs to be a Team Turnover Stat.
These guys played hard and when you are trying to make an entry pass into the post from the three point stripe everytime as a guard (system) well the opposing team is going to walk your post guy out of the paint to defend him away from the basket and the secondary guard is going to jump the entry lane to disturb the pass or make a steal. Thats what is happening and been happening in the past two games. We need to fix that.
I see this as growing from the coaches to the players, what is going to fit this group, who is going to be our go to guys like last year we all knew it was Matty and Brandon. Time to define that now.
Agree, some turnovers for some players may only happen with reduced playing time. I like C. Counts he simplifies things when he comes in but ball rotation has to be another key thing. We have to move to the ball better and our spacing is not great but each game it gets better. When I say that we have to make the extra pass to the guy in the shooting position to make a basket, cut down on the one on one play but again we were in the game so there are only little things to fix.
I don't look at points I look at who can score for us, who can defend, who can rebound. You say post players aren't getting the ball well I say can you get a rebound. I would take it personal as a big man that my 6'0 Guard leads us in Rebounds (JZ is getting that done). It goes both ways. I'm a fan and I look closely at games and I've watched this one three times now.
Assessment:
- Spacing - Who are our go to guys - Who is 1st off the bench (If players are not in foul trouble) - How do we help on the press and trap (Who's coming to the ball when a player is trapped) - Can our bigs get an Offensive Board (but first you have to get position and know when a shot is going up, goes back to set plays and who are we designing them for)
We cannot have a guy score 50% of our team points, that means he's doing to much and turnovers happen when you are trying to make something happen, we scored 56 and one player scored 23 of them, not good in my take.
You would probably think I should be happy no I want to see them WIN and I know they have the coaches and players to get this done and done now.
Last year when all was healthy we knew, 1st option, Brandon -- 2nd option Matty, -- 3rd option miller and then whats open. Its time we make that committment to this team and if the 1st, 2nd and 3rd options are not there then we try something or someone else.

Wow. Some Good, Bad, and Ugly thoughts on my first game of the year. Good: -Deadwiler seems to have gained confidence in his outside shot. Don't think he should be point, though. Better off designing plays so he can get his shot. -Orlando is a large mammal. For a true freshman, he's physically ready, and I really like his game. Reminds me of a poor man's Carmelo with inside/outside threat. -Um, parking was ample? Bad- -Leadership. This goes for both players/coaches. So many uncontested layups/dunks. I would have appreciated that if someone drove baseline, there'd be a hard foul, at least to send a message. Alas. Ugly- -This team is lost offensively. No spacing whatsoever. Blame goes directly to Coach T for this. It was mentioned that SDSU had some young players, but they were moving the ball exceptionally well around the perimeter. I counted 9 passes w/o a dribble on one possesion. It looked as if we hadn't practiced a motion offense all season. Plus, I didn't see one play called from the sideline. -We need athletes. They out-quicked and -muscled us, which can be deterred by superior coaching and execution. Not with 20+ turnovers. -On the court, I can't tell who the freshman, and who the lone upperclassmen are. Ziri/Deric just look like their going through the motions. I know they're trying their hardest, but it's not working. I'd love to eat some crow, but this season is going to be pretty, pretty, ugly. Sums it up from the SDSU post last week.

Some interesting stuff talked about here. I was happy with the effort the team put forth, but we need desperately to clean up the TO situation. I think a good deal of that falls directly on PG play. As good as Deadwiler was, nothing about him reads PG to me. I think the added weight of having to bring the ball up and run the team could be taking away from his ability to really get out and score regularly like he did tonight. That is in no way a knock on shawn, I just think we would benifit from moving him to the deuce. I recorded the game and watched it again this morning, and i dont think i agreen with Deadmans assessment of the early TO's being team Turnovers. UCSB was in a matchup press, and they would just run and jump. Bringing more players back would just go to add to the congestion in th back court. The pg just has to be under controll and attack his defender to get across, i think our biggest problem has been that our PG's have gotten sped up whenever pressure comes in the back court.
Ironlions, i dont really agree with the assesment that our post players arent very good. I think we definitely need to start playing inside out. My feeling is that with limited touches our post players have played pretty well this year. I would liike to see the stats, but I think with the limited opportunities they have gotten they have done well in the post.
Overall, I am not really big on moral victories, I want this team to start getting some W's. But if this team continues to play as hard as it did tonight, and can limit the turnover numbers, i think this is going to be a pretty scary team come conference time.
Lions, Keep getting better, keep playing hard and we will be behind you.... I just hope the student section will

Anyways, he is a PG but maybe at this level he's a combo, gosh I never thought I'd say that. Don't get to caught up in the 3's he's made, he's a warrior that gets better the more you throw him around and the madder he gets. Getting to the rack is his specialty but hey what ever the coaches do he'll do. They were team turnovers. I didn't say bring them in the front court, when we passed the half court no one came back for the ball but scoop I agree to disagree. No moral victories anymore, just minimize the TO's and they will win. They surely have proven they have the talent to win.
