There was little reason to extend Max's contract last year outside of a silly run in the WCC tournament. He has proven that he is not a leader and will not get LMU to their goal of contending for the WCC title and an NCAA bid. To boot, Dr. Husak is zero for 5 in hiring and should not have a say in the next coaching decision. He has failed in every aspect of our signature program and his one-year extension should be his final straw. Show him the door and restore the roar. Again, show Husak the door and restore the roar. one has realistic goals or expectations. We should: 1) Contend for a WcC title 2) Produce student/athletes we can be proud of 3) PUt a basketball product that represents our university 4) Graduateo our student atheletes %) Achieve an NCAA tournament berth in 5 years. That won't happen under the suboptimal Husak/Good regime. We have never even advanced past the WCC semifinals, or even come close. Both should go and we need ot wipe a clean slate and bring in someone with Jesuit values with a winning pedigree. IF you disagree, that is your right and I welcome debate. There is a huge undercurrent of Lion fans dying for success. There is a huge undercurrent of AAU coaches, High school coaches, that remember the Roar, that would like nothing better than LMU to kick UCLA, USC, SDSU, and Pepp's ass. AS it stands now, our claim to fame is Mila Kunis took three classes here (no shame on her, love her). AS it wlll be later under the new coach. We restore the roar. It starts now. Admin Edit: Removed name calling and insult to members of the forum. You missed Tyra Banks as well.

I would agree with you about Husak. As the AD, he needs to create an environment where the school/students are excited about it's athletics. As a season ticket holder who attends a lot of games there is no excitement about the basketball program from the students. The student section is a disappointment when compared to other schools in the WCC. This has gone on for a long time, not just this past season. There are many things the school can do to get students in the seats and it is just not happening. LMU needs to create an exciting environment for our team. Teams feed on home court advantage and I do not think we have home court advantage in our own house.
I think this starts at the top. I am not sure the school believes athletics/basketball is where they want to focus. As the AD Husak need to put in place some events/partnerships with sororities, fraternities and other athletic teams to get students in the seats. There seams to be a lack of interest in his part with new ideas or events to bring fans into the gym.
I am undecided about Coach Good because I do believe the program is in a better place today than it was 5 or 6 years ago. Obviously, I wish we won more games and we saw better player development over the last few years. We have a more talented players and are a program on the rise. I am on the fence about Coach at this point because I love his passion and commitment to the players. I do question some of his coaching when it comes to some of his offense or defensive schemes. All the fans of teams in the WCC have negative things to stay about their coaches. That's the difficulty in being a coach. I will watch this season play out before I make a final judgement on Coach Good.

I get frustrated with those on this board who don't go back 20+ year and defend the abominable coaching of Good and his staff. I read a reply recently saying good was better than Tention (Hyper-Tension) and defending why he should stay. Conversely, that day I took two sh*ts and compared them. I flushed both. No one has realistic goals or expectations. We should: 1) Contend for a WcC title 2) Produce student/athletes we can be proud of 3) PUt a basketball product that represents our university 4) Graduateo our student atheletes %) Achieve an NCAA tournament berth in 5 years. AS it stands now, our claim to fame is Mila Kunis took three classes here (no shame on her, love her). AS it wlll be later under the new coach. We restore the roar. It starts now. I applaud your anxiety and willingness to go against the grain. Regarding our coach, its pretty much falling on deaf ears. As much as its more of the same, the "have to wait and see" mantra is trudging along. Also, strange arguments and excuses are abound. For example I never suggested that our talent is worse than the Tention years. I mentioned how our record and results in conference are the same as it was during the Tention years. Somehow comparing a simple win and loss record rallied the Max Good supporters under the "yes but our talent level is better" argument. However this completely contradicts the "our guys are not working hard enough to get better" idea because working hard is also a talent in today's athletic world, as says guys like Charles Barkely, and Chris Webber and Shaq every Thursday. I also tend to think working hard is talent. And when you hire or recruit somebody, usually you look for hardworking people. So if our players aren't working hard than maybe they aren't that talented, or the person doing the recruiting is making bad judgements and mistakes. In this scenario it would be Max Good who is an overrated recruiter. It's a weird circular argument that has no "win" but somehow people remained convinced. The only thing I feel like looking at when examining 5-6 years is your results. And yes, as you just pointed out, its bad and shameful. I would just narrow the argument to just one statement:In one of the most truly wide open conference seasons in memory, LMU is still at the bottom of the conference. That's all you need to know. People have a weird gauge of success. The WCC is rising as a whole. LMU's "rise" in the rating of the recruits is really tied to things like the TV deal, national awareness of the WCC, the schedules and places we play etc. However, within this "rise" is the fact that LMU has not risen in terms of its position in the conference. Why? Because all the teams are rising. So yeah, if we're comparing ourselves to the SWAC or the MEAC or Big Sky, we've probably gotten better during the Max Good era. However, in terms of the WCC, we're in no better position. But here is yet another contradiction. I'm hearing that "well everybody complains about their coach in this conference." So in one aspect, we compare ourselves to other programs, but in another one we don't. Odd.I'd really compare the record first and then ignore the fan reactions. I completely agree with you that we're not on a track to success in the WCC. Perhaps a move to a lower rated conference would showcase our program's improvement. We do really well against the Big Sky and Big West. Of course, dropping to another conference would mean a hit to the type of talent we'd get. But if we consistently measure ourselves in non-conference records and recruiting, then it should be an option. As far as your mention of all the coaches at the youth level who really miss LMU's domination, I echoed that sentiment on another thread. I don't know you or have any connections to you, so I'd be curious as to where you heard that. Personally I heard that from some really important people in these circles. But I really want to discuss the ROAR. It's downright embarrassing the level of student apathy. But its not their fault. For one, the product sucks. Two, there is no hope for the program to get better. Three, the scheduling this year was awful. At first I thought it was a great idea to let them travel and get battled tested. Instead, it wore them out, made them sick and tired and terrified of playing on the road. And worse of all, the student body saw them play twice at home before the WCC play started. You get excited for the season to start in November and December, but the guys never played at home so during the time to capitalize on students' interest level, they weren't even there. And then by the time the students returned, they are already out of the Conference race. And then there are the rules on the ROAR. No heckling, no chants, no party atmosphere. You'd think we were Pepperdine's dorm room policies. What's next, the male and female students can't cheer together past 8pm? You know what got me interested into going to a game. My first LMU game was in 2004, LMU vs Washington Huskies. Nate Robinson was the star. It's a Sunday morning hardly any interest but there was the ROAR chanting "Gary coleman" to Nate. It got under his skin. Then he started dropping shots and dunks and they won. But it was FUN. I'm not sure why our lousy program wants to limit the fan experience. Its already limited by the product. Opportunities to cheer and be excited are limited. However, they have decided that the ROAR kids should be controlled like my high school assemblies. Anyhow I've spent a lot less time on the board this year because I too am frustrated. There are dozens of candidates, tons of potential community support, but unfortunately no fan support for a coaching change. Like I said, Husak has the best job in America.

I fell asleep with 10 minutes left in the Pepperdine game. The W tv feed was pretty choppy too. Not surprised that I didn't miss much other than us gassing at the end.
One huge fundamental flaw in our game-planning is that we are trying to run and gun with a 7-man rotation. Not only does this play to our weaknesses: 1) We're not very good shooters, 2) Our defense is abominable guarding the outside shot, 3) we're very thin inside, but it allows other teams to wear us down.
We have the worst defense in the league by far (only BYU is worse PPG-wise and that is more a product of their tempo) and we can only go 7 deep (I'm not counting our mascot Max Heller since he is not capable at this level). God forbid we ever get into foul trouble (which we have largely avoided by utilizing a strategy to just let the other team score with no resistance when they get it down low, witness Dower and Waldow having career games).
Since we aren't going to win in a shootout consistently (Pacific game aside, that was an anomaly) and we don't have any depth which will hurt us if we make a Vegas run (unlikely, but we could win two games if the chips fell right), why wouldn't we take the air out of the ball, try and play lockdown defense and rely on AI and Payne to create with the shot clock winding down? It's not like we run any offensive sets in the first place so minimizing possessions give us our best chance at victory and may even give us some semi-fresh legs come crunch time.
It seems this is an obvious and fatal flaw in our strategy.

Seems like this is an appropriate place to repost this, so I'll go ahead and do it:
An open letter to one Mr. Bill Husak (who does NOT deserve the doctor title),
YOU'RE WELCOME for showing up to every single SCU game year in and year out. YOU'RE WELCOME for being more consistent than our own players every single year. YOU'RE WELCOME for my undying support when you play the games I'm able to attend, despite our horrible away record. I'm sorry I can't make a win happen, even with my screeching and cheering at every away game I attend, but at least I'm doing more than schmoozing with the big rollers sitting behind the basket and pretending like I care about what's happening on the court. I'm sorry you don't have the decency to acknowledge ANY of the people who cheer for your team at the away games, even when you don't give a "humbling" speech at the alumni events. I'm sorry I refuse to give Athletics enough money to deserve your attention, as I won't be giving Athletics any more of my money for as long as you are in the position of AD. Thank goodness the brand new coach and the players have hearts big enough to shoot a head nod of appreciation our way. Thank goodness the other fans who sit with me have a good time and appreciate my support because your obvious, intentional snub at every single Santa Clara University basketball game is not one to go unnoticed. Maybe people wouldn't hate you so much if you didn't hate them for being so supportive of a team in spite of your leadership. LMU Athletics is far more deserving of a fearless leader who actually cares about them. I have YET to see you care one lick about the very people representing you and your programs, both on and off the court.
God rest Betty and her soul. Each year that I have to still see your face, Husak, I miss her gentle, loving, SUPPORTIVE personality that much more.
--I was there in the CAGE for my three years at LMU, until it died in 2005, thanks to restrictions from Athletics. No matter how much we sucked, Betty supported us. Without someone like Betty to turn a deaf ear on the things the students say, there won't be any fun happening at games. The student section is now lame and boring. If what slblions08 is saying is true about the rules, that's a damn shame. I remember in 2005 when they stopped allowing students to tunnel the players after the games. The disconnect was beginning. Now as an alum, it's even more evident when I feel NO appreciation from Athletic Director for my extremely vocal support for the team. He does NOT care about anything more than money. The end.

I get the feeling you don't like Dr.Husak. You're entitled to your opinion but to say that he hasn't earned his doctorate is more than a little far-fetched and beyond your qualifications to pass judgement. In any situation like this, isn't it better to sit down, face to face, with the subject of your vitriol? There is never an appropriate time to launch such an attack without opportunity for in-person discussion. Bill is too much of a gentleman to get into an on-line debate with a hidden opponent. I hope this is truly "the end, and that this forum doesn't see any more of this type of attack.

Conversations have been had. That's why no one in my family and others will monetarily support the Athletics Department for as long as he remains in office. I'd rather go to away games and be vocal than go to a home game and be silenced.

Russell Turner just completed his 5-year plan at Irvine. They won the Big West Tournament and will be dancing. For the 26th year in a row, I will be not attending the NCAA tournament to support my beloved team.
