San Diego Christian Hawks
NAIA Athletics
After losing an exhibition opener to Southern Utah 57-79, the Hawks went on to win their first three games over: Bethesda University of California 84-65, Northwest University 70-55 and University of California Merced 85-56. They followed with a loss to Santa Clara (officially another exhibition) 70-58 after leaving the court at halftime tied at 29. Peter Beale-Wirsing’s , 6’8” 220 Senior, 20 points and 14 boards led the Hawks vs the Broncos. The Hawks play Claremont-Mudd tonight (Nov 19) before coming to Gersten this Sunday for another “exhibition” contest.
The game may not be a cakewalk but although I hope it is, it may be a more than competitive game in Gersten..

The Hawks lost to Div III Claremont-Mudd-Scripts last evening 69-53 (not a close game). "Peter Beale-Wirsing followed up his great performance against Santa Clara scoring 19 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Rafael Rodriguez was the only other SDC player in double figures scoring 10 points with two assists." www.sdcchawks.com/article/929.phpSunday's game should offer a chance to improve our game and perhaps see more of our reserve players. Go Lions!

Nice "Get Right" game by the Lions. Good ball movement and a bit more willingness to attempt open shots. Evan seemed to locate his touch. Deji was applying pressure both offensively and defensively, Enjoyed watching Patson played D and continue his efficiency on O. Down the road, would love for him to develop into a guy we can dial up for a easy basket. Money was heard from on the defensive end. More good stuff from Simon. Finally, Chase is such a glue guy. He may not have scored but he had like 8-9 assists to only 1 turnover? plus he actually bothered those he guarded.
Would love to see us have more of an impact on the perimeter. SD was noticeably quicker than us. They beat us off the dribble repeatedly and got space to get their 3s off. Dunlap can't be comfortable with an NAIA team bombing away from 3 and/or blowing by us.
Overall good win...on to the next one

Well yes: but in a Pantheon of notable Lion victories these wins over lower Division schools won't even make it into the parking lot.
Still, I thought it was pretty well played against a scrappy NAIA team and not non-entertaining at all. I thought Coach Dunlap's management of the game was "tasteful", he did not run up the score and I suspect, accomplished what he set out to. The teams shooting confidence should be vastly improved and he gave us a more in depth look at the newer players. Siame is going to be fun for us to watch during his Lion career. We should be in shape for a competitive game against Riverside Wed. GO Lions!
BTW, the last couple of games I did notice a couple of instances that drive me nuts; they occur under the basket when the other team merely waltzes in and scores an essentially uncontested field goal while we are standing there with only our teeth in our mouth - damn I hate when that happens. I know coaches are on it but I wish I could suggest they borrow an "Initiation Paddle" from a Greek Fraternity and apply liberally to the offenders butts. Oh Well, time for my meds.

Nice analysis lmuballfan.
Husky you make good points also. I like you suggestions on coaching but today I suspect paddling has been replaced with “time outs?”
I also saw us go deep into the first half with only 3 players scoring: Payne, Siame and Deji, which concerned me as Payne and Siame don’t even start (at present). Finally, Herman joined the fun along with Humphries, who made several nice buckets from the perimeter; we need more of his perimeter scoring to help open up the inside.
We totally over-manned this opponent and should have dominated the game. Indeed, we built a nice lead in the first half but then really did not build on it until late in the game. In fact, with about 10 minutes remaining in the game, SDC got within single digits as we hit a scoring drought and SDC was burying NBA 3’s. Instant-offense Evan Payne came to the rescue and soon the lead was back to a comfortable level.
Highlights:
Payne’s offense – Coach Dunlap won’t be able to tame the enthusiasm of this young talent and he should give up trying. Evan will play his game and he makes it work – impossible inside layups and great 3-pointers. His offense is key to our wins this season.
Siame’s scoring – he likes to go to the hoop. His skills need polish but I love his desire and aggressiveness on offense.
Deji on both ends – nice recovery game as Deji had been rather quiet in earlier games. He showed real desire on offense, mainly around the hoop where he is strongest.
Humphries outside shooting – not too many goals but a confidence building game (if David really needs confidence).
Flint – lmuballfan said it all – he brings his senior leadership on the floor.
In general: Spiers made a nice 3-pointer as did Herman. Godwin continues to show leadership on defense. Mornar was a beast on defense with numerous blocks. He scored nicely but did have at least 3 or 4 good outside shots go halfway into the basket only to pop out. He could have been luckier and I suspect will be in the future. Simon getting good minutes and experience at PG. Devon Wyatt made a brief appearance late in the game but looked a bit uncomfortable. My guess is Devon will Redshirt this season to further develop his game, which will be to his advantage in the long run.

I'd like to feel a bit more positive about things but I'm certainly having doubts. We've looked okay and have had some good moments in our two games against lower division teams, but even in those games out slowness and inability to defend the 3 have shown. Then in our Division I games, we have really struggled, and none of those teams are high end opponents. Wichita State is going to be interesting. Let's hope Dunlap's teaching skills come to the forefront quickly.

Slb - I pretty much agree with who should be starting.
I'm really hoping Matt can play a strong point guard. We need that!
I've heard some comments that Patson struggles with endurance. That may be why he's not starting.
Given Hernann's body, I don't undersrand how he is getting out-performed by Money. His performance to date has been particularly disappointing given our opponents to date have been small teams.
I wonder if Humphries should get the nod over Deji. Deji has good games but he also disappears. On the other hand, Maybe it's best to have Humphries come off the bench with his enthusiasm and aggressiveness.
I agree this year's team looks bigger and more fit, but they are really slow. That troubles me a lot. If you're getting beat by SD Christian, things are going to get really rough down the road.
