Saint Mary’s Part II
Since the Lions 9 point loss to the Gaels on Jan 3, Saint Mary’s has won over Pacific, USD, BYU and Portland and lost to the Zags (47-68) and now stands solidly in 2nd place in the WCC with an 8-1 record. Overall the Gaels are 16-4 and look to have a shot at the NCAA tournament with a good finish to their season.
Big man Waldo continues to lead the Gaels with 20.2 ppg followed by Carter 12.5, Bright 10.9 and Jackson 8.0.
Let’s see if the Lions can continue their fine play and Dunlap can come up with a game plan to defeat this senior-laden opponent on the road. Hopefully, Siame will be back to help on defense against Waldo.
Reportedly, Coach Peterson was not at the USF game Saturday as he was on the road recruiting. Maybe some news on that front would also boost fan confidence?
Gametime: Thursday, Jan 29, 7:30 pm in Moraga. TV: Comcast Sports Network CA Video: TheW.tv (out of area)

The Gaels aren't getting much off their bench. Bennett continues to do an outstanding job maximizing the talents of his players.

Lions are 14 point underdogs. Is Siame back? It would help vs Waldo.

Not streaming again.
Guess I just tune into KLXU, not nearly as frustrating.

Never mind. After my wife coaxed me off the ceiling I learned we are on both Cable and Direct.

To be honest I think Godwin lucked out on that lay up but I'll take the points. Lions up 12-11

Except for last 30 seconds LMU played very well. Carter kept Gaels in the game on first half with threes. Lions alternating defenses has surprised Gaels at times.
Deji's injury will really hurt in 2d half. Lions are going to need someone else (Hayes?) to step up.

Agreed but didn't Deji come back?

He is out again. Looks like he strained his right quad from TV. I think he is done for night.

No one other than Godwin stepped up in 2d half.

St. Mary's last offensive put back caused us to miss the damn spread by 1. If Evan could have only scored a single basket in the 2nd half. Had to be Evan's 1st time as a Lion to go scoreless an entire half. Godwin obvious player of the game for us. We held Waldo down but were burned from the 3 line, big time. Darned if we do and darned if we don't. Liked our traps, the fact that we again had relatively few turnovers, and that Wyatt is getting some playing time (think it's probably a good investment). All in all another tolerable loss.

I thought the Lions played quite well, with one notable exception. In the second half no one could step up as a scorer. Godwin carried most of the offensive might in the half. With Deji injured, David fouled out and Evan not hitting the broad side of the barn; there was no one capable of scoring from the guard position.
Godwin gets my vote for Lion of the Game. He missed some bunnies but he also showed some good offense. He stayed with Waldow all game and did an admirable job on him. Waldow got his points but he didn't dominate. The Lions did a good job of doubling him when appropriate but Godwin really did a good job of containing the guy.
Evan had a terrible night, shooting 3 of 15. We really needed him to step up... but it didn't happen.
Deji played a good game until he got hurt. I liked his aggressiveness on offense.
On the sour side - once again, we made the other team's outside shooter look like a Hall of Fame All-American. We have to learn that you can't leave guys like Carter, Clarke(SCU)and Dee wide open. They kill us everytime. We really lost the momentum in the game late in the first half when Carter hit 3 threes. Then, a turnover AND an ill advised shot by Chase in the closing seconds of the first half, and the Lions were doomed. Those things turned a nice 7 point lead into a deficit and gave the Gaels all the momentum they needed going into the second half.
We lost by 14 but the team showed it could stay competitive against the #2 team in the conference. Hopefully that bodes well for our upcoming games against teams that aren't any better than the Lions. There's no reason why we can't finish the season on a strong note and move up some in the standings.
