Gabe must have given him a good report about staff and overall scene. I am sure Evan will flourish there. Long Beach always plays a tough schedule and home games at the Pyramid are a lot more lively than those at Gersten.

LB plays a terrific schedule every year and competes for league title every year. Smart choice by Evan - could have gone bigger program but will get to play a lot at the beach.

I dunno about this decision...WCC is a better league than the Big West..basing this purely on social media but maybe he wanted to stay in LA area because of a gf? I dunno, just saying I think there were better options for him of all the schools he listed as interested in him. I would not be surprised if Siame ends up at the Beach too.

This is great! If Patson ends up there we can still root for our lions, but also be able to see if Max's kids were NCAA tournament caliber like many on here thought they were should they all have stayed. This is getting to be like a head to head experiment in some plot twisting way.

In some respects I am surprised by his choice because he had some lofty expectations on some other big time programs. Maybe his demand was not as strong as he thought, who knows. LBSU is a safe pick. Weaker conference, but will play a tough schedule and has a decent chance to make the tournament in his last 2 years. It will be fun to watch Long Beach with Gabe and Evan to see what they can do. Good luck to Evan.

I can understand Evan's choice of schools and am glad (for my sake) that it will be easier to follow his career while at Long Beach State. Ask yourself where you would want to spend the next three years of your young life (if you were Evan) - in Pittsburgh, Detroit, or another place with foul winter weather, or in Southern California. I know what my answer is. If Evan moves on to the pro level, he can get there from here in any case so why not enjoy life now? Best of luck to Evan and we'll be watching you and Gabe - maybe even taking in a game or two!

I came across a Big Weat preview article and, had not realized that Evan Payne had left Long Beach State and turned, according to the LBSU prospectus, "professional".
Anybody know where he went?

in this age of young basketball players with many other options outside of just college ball. Coaches need to understand that they need to change with the times. Both Dunlap and Monson ran Payne out of their programs.
Its unfortunate but thats the reality. Best wishes to Evan

900 transfers last year in Division I basketball. There is clearly a disconnect somewhere between coaches and players. I would not be hasty to blame the coaches "per se." Kids today come out of AAU, yes AAU not HS, so damn spoiled that you cannot coach them. I won't speak specifically to Evan, but I saw his body language when he was here and just like Manuel it was/is unacceptable. Before grassroots basically took over amateur basketball, you actually had kids that were coached hard and taught at the HS level to be mature and the kids were ready to handle the rigors of Division I basketball. Those days are over.
Schools lie to kids, kids con schools, schools "evaluate" players at NCAA live shoe circuit events and "offer" kids with no understanding at all of the kid's character, or peripheral distractions. Bottom line is the whole system is flawed

OK - optimistic about the Lions but pessimistic about the whole system - I'll accept that trade off. Go Lions!

Evan Payne playing professionally in Vegas. lmulionsroar.com/?p=3591Drew Viney playing professionally in Japan. “Forward Drew Viney delivered a terrific all-around performance for the East’s top-seeded Grouses (44-13), scoring a game-best 35 points on 12-for-14 shooting (including two 3-pointers). He sank 9 of 10 shots from the free-throw line, handed out four assists, made four steals and swatted a shot for good measure. And when asked about his performance, it brought up memories of a 44-point game, which he noted is his career high, that he had as a high school senior for Villa Park (California) High.” lmulionsroar.com/?p=3641Both thanks to Lions Roar

Good luck to Evan, he is a skilled player that has the ability to have a solid pro career wherever it may be.
Drew on the other hand has the talent to play elsewhere other than Japan! I wonder why Europe didn't pan out for him.
