We were atrocious in the last 15 minutes last night, and not much better before then. The lack of shooting is really catching up to us. Eli was stroking it last night, but do we expect that to continue? There's so little floor spacing most of the time we're on offense. I'm not ready to eat crow quite yet on saying Batemon would handle WCC double teams, but I'm setting the table and inquiring about prices. The lack of spacing/secondary creation is making his life very difficult right now. We can't keep running that zone. If Pepperdine didn't start 1-9 from downtown, on some contested, some open looks, this game could have been over long ago. Teams are going to be too effective shooting against it. I have my suspicions (maybe someone can direct me to defensive efficiency stats) that our low points against totals are more due to a slow pace and controlling the boards than anything we've been doing on the defensive end. Shooting teams have really diced up our perimeter D. Finally, I've not been a Dunlap hater, despite not being impressed, either - however, pulling Markusson and Batemon at the same time, with the score tied 36-36, was a horrendous decision. Unsurprisingly, that set Pepp off on a run that we never recovered from.
Really frustrating game. Shout out to Root Sports for airing it on TV. Props to Eli for a spectacular game. Dame needs to work on his shot, but and Eli are a good future foundation to build on.

It's too bad we have a dweeb coach with zero personality, while the other WCC schools for the most part have energetic, really personable guys at the helm. Would you want to play for him?

I'll be the first to admit that CMD often can't seem to get out of his own way and tends to overthink things waaaaaaay too much and there is no way that he's the life of the year-end BBQ. That said, I have no doubt he genuinely cares about his players' welfare on and off the court. As a player or a parent of a player, that would be important to me. You have to realize a lot of D1 coaches are climbers who have huge egos and their glad handing is fake and self-serving. I would agree that the WCC does, especially now, have a nice group of coaches. Finally, a lot of players have closer relationships with their assistant coaches so not sure the head guy needs to be buddy buddy with the players as long as he is consistent and cares. One area that I do think that personality helps is when it comes to recruiting.

But that is my point Pump fake-- you have to relate to the players in order for them to want to play for you. I just dont see a player wanting to join forces with him.

One aspect of the Pepperdine game I have not seen brought up was the fact that Herman did not play at all, even in garbage time.
I understand if Dunlap has shortened his rotation and Bell has moved ahead of Herman, but if Herman is healthy I think you owe it to a fifth-year senior to put him in for the final few minutes of a blowout.

A good people person would do that. But aloof Mike is Mike.

Herman's knee is bothering him again.
Yes, the team was awful at Pepperdine, just like they were for the Riverside game. But I am amazed how optimism can be replaced by the diatribe I see about Dunlap after one bad game. He is not at all gregarious or humorous, but he runs a clean program and passionately cares about his players' academic welfare. It's clear some of you don't like him, although I doubt that any of you haters actually know him very well. For those who think he is an awful coach, I must refer to his two D2 national championships and his sweet 16 success under difficult circumstances at Arizona. I might also remind you what many other very knowledgeable basketball people have said about him. You can easily find those comments online. I doubt anyone on this site knows half as much as those people.
I will acknowledge that Dunlap might be a bad fit for LMU, and that another one or two years of failure should result in his termination. But for now, can we just be fans?

I am extremely optimistic, and I did preface my comment above by saying “if” Herman was healthy, so the fact that his knee is bothering him would explain his absence from the court.
29 years was a long time ago, I think everyone wants success and hopefully we can bounce back today and start another winning streak.
Go Lions!

Waves lost a heartbreaker to USF when their star Cody Ross turned the ball over with 12 seconds left and trailing by 1. The Edwards brothers and Ross will give WCC opponents fits this season.
