But it’s not time to shed any crocodile tears for the Gaels. I saw some of their latest win over a vulnerable BYU (88-66) and they looked stronger than I thought they might be. PG Ford can score all over the floor and is their key player. Expect a battle in LA this weekend (if the Lions show up). Gametime: Saturday, Jan 12, 7 pm in Gersten. Video: Spectrum Sportsnet.

By the way, if they are having a bit of a down season, the Gaels have 2 Redshirt 7-footers in the wings for next season.

The Gaels have two significant weaknesses right now. One is the lack of a true inside presence. Not fixable this year but it looks like Coach B has a solution in the wings. Two, is the lack of on-court cohesiveness. This is almost unheard of with a Randy Bennett team, but it’s true ... and attributable to the significant number of new players on this year’s roster. This problem is going to disappear rapidly as the Gaels make their way thru their WCC schedule. I saw a high difference between the first half of their USF game vs the second half of that game and the BYU game where they just toyed with the Cougars.
People have been counting the Gaels out this year. I don’t see it that way. They’ll put up a strong fight for second. Their mediocre OOC results will hurt them come selection Sunday.

The Lions get 5 points at home vs the Gaels. Will we cover? Will we win outright? If the guys play our best game, it will be an interesting contest.

5 or 6 points seem about right based on strength of schedule if nothing else. I don't think St Mary's even played a lower division team this year. Could be a fun game. Their hot guard can be slowed by McClenden and/or Quintana; while Batemon is due for a good game. They are billing the game as a "couple of 400 win coaches squaring off" - Hardly: All of Coach Bennet's wins have come with the Gaels (a Division I team) wile Mike has racked up only 60 something Division I wins. Don't get me wrong, I'll be rooting for Randy to still be stuck at 400 after we take care of business tonight. GO LIONS!!!

I know Saint Marys is down this year or whatever, but they are 41 in KenPom and 38 in ESPN BPI (in my opinion the two most accurate ranking systems). A win tonight would be the most impressive win in at least the past 10 years...

I could maybe agree with last 9 years. In 2010 we upset Gonzaga, eventual conference champs. Gonzaga lost a few but to schools like Michigan St, Syracuse, and Duke.
