The Cougars losses include some good teams such as Nevada and Houston and in the WCC Saint Mary’s (88-66) and USF (82-63) by significant margins. They did look sharp in beating Saint Mary’s in Provo in their latest outing.
We can expect a tough outing Saturday. It would be nice if we don’t dig a large hole and climb in to start the game. The Cougars will be coming off a contest with Gonzaga which might humble them a bit.
Gametime: Saturday, Feb 1, 6 pm in Provo. Video: BYU TV.

Lions are 6 point underdogs. Cougars always play tough at home (although you wouldn’t know that from the Zags game Thursday).

Is Joe Cool back? Either way Douglas has to start. Saint Mary’s shooting lights out vs the Dons and are up by 17 at the half! Amazing.

On the KXLU pregame show interview before the Pacific game, Dunlap specifically said that Douglas “was the best player on the court” against Santa Clara. Whenever Quintana does return, it will be interesting to see who doesn’t start. A good problem to have.

Subs gave the team some life but the roof had already fallen in on the Lions. Disappointing game but when the Cougars got rolling there was no stopping them

The second half performance was the ugliest display of basketball I have seen in a long time.

Given free reign, Petr played decently when the bench was cleared. Ivan showed some impressive scoring potential also. Just goes to show that Dunlap hasn’t been maximizing use of the talent he has on the team. The starters looked completely flummoxed in the second half after the Cougars started hitting from outside. Wonder what Pinkens thought of the game?

Three observations from the game:
1) On a positive note, we did a tremendous job of shutting down a future NBA draft pick (Childs, 6 points) and Haws (9). We forced other players to beat us… Unfortunately they did. Baxter scoring 25 in his first start is akin to us starting Alipiev and having him score 25. And Emery was 5-of-5 on 3s...it’s amazing BYU only scored 67.
2) As has been previously discussed, if the other team stops Batemon, we’re in trouble...in our 16 victories Batemon averages 19.7 points per game. In our 7 losses, he averages 9.6 points per game. We need someone else to step up, which leads to my third observation...
3) Douglas shouldn’t come off the floor. With Quintana back, Douglas played 23 minutes, Joe 22 and McClendon 21. Extrapolate that over a normal 40-minute game, and you are looking at 26 or 27 minutes for each of those three sharing two spots. I think Douglas should be playing 35 minutes with Jeffrey and Joe splitting the other 45 (22-23 each). Dunlap can’t do an equal time share with those three, Douglas needs to be allowed to spread his wings.
