USD TOREROS INVITED TO INAUGURAL ANAHEIM CLASSIC
Thanksgiving Weekend Event to Air on ESPN2 and ESPNU
ESPN Regional Television, Inc., announced today that the first Anaheim Classic, an eight-team, 12-game, bracketed collegiate basketball tournament, will take place Nov. 22, 23, and 25 at the Anaheim Convention Center. The San Diego Toreros, under the direction of first-year coach Bill Grier, will join Southern California, Southern Illinois, Miami-Ohio, South Alabama, Tennessee-Chattanooga, Mississippi State and UC Irvine for the eight-team field. USD is scheduled to face the USC Trojans in the fourth and final game on Day One (9:00 p.m. PST) with the game being telecast on ESPN2. Complete tournament action will air on either ESPN2 or ESPNU. Southern California and Southern Illinois were both NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 teams from last season, while Miami-Ohio was an NCAA first-round participant.
"This is a terrific opportunity for our program," said Bill Grier. "With ESPN's involvement you know it will be a first class and well run event. The field is impressive with USC, Southern Illinois and Mississippi State all top-25 caliber teams. We are excited for the opportunity to play USC on day one. What Tim Floyd (USC head coach) has done up there in a short amount of time to get them on the national level is impressive. They signed one of the premier players (O.J. Mayo) in the nation and have a great interior guy (Taj Gibson), so it will be a huge challenge for us."
The tournament, which will be hosted by ESPNU and the Big West Conference, will be played at the 7,500-seat Anaheim Convention Center, which has hosted the Big West Conference post-season tournament for the past seven years. Four games will be played each day, with each team playing daily. The championship game on ESPN2 will feature the two undefeated teams squaring off on the final day of competition, November 25th. The remaining teams will play in consolation games. Disneyland Resort in Anaheim will host the eight participating teams during the event. Fans can purchase tickets starting today, August 16, through www.Ticketmaster.com or Ticketmaster at (714) 704-2000. Additional tournament information can be found at www.anaheimclassic.com.
"The Anaheim area is a wonderful destination for an event of this caliber and the Disneyland Resort will provide a tremendous experience for the teams participating," said Pete Derzis, senior vice president and general manager of ESPN Regional Television. "The many viewers of the ESPN networks and the fans who attend the tournament will enjoy some fantastic college basketball action."
