November 7 vs Pacific Life at Gersten.
I am less excited than normal about the season opening soon but am quite curious to see if Coach Johnson's approach to team building is going to work. He is building a team mostly around 6'7" (or so) players and banking on an athletic team that can run and gun. I believe we can run but can we close on those runs? And can we gun any better than last season?
Will our team be any better on defense on the perimeter and inside? There were way too many easy layups by opponents last season and we seem to be counting on a 6'8" center to carry the ball inside, spelled occasionally by our raw 7 footer.
Will Douglas last through the majority of the games or is he rally another pocket sized Anthony Davis (of the Lakers)?
It will be our first year in seemingly forever to not play around Eli Scott, which will be an interesting change.
Some keys to success include Cam Shelton stepping up his game on offense (and defense) and being a true point guard by making assists.
Anderson continuing to show growth on the court - he is one of our more skilled players.
Keli playing a strong power forward, especially on the boards.
Douglas staying healthy.
Lamaj continuing growth on the court - candidly I didn't see much improvement from his freshman year into last season but he is young and seemingly has potential.
Marble showing more on offense.
Stephens finding minutes as a Freshman.
Michael Graham proving he is a true starting "5".
Our touted transfers (Ahrens and Taitz) living up to hype.
Iaanza contributing to rim defense and earning minutes on the court.
Nobles finding his place on the court.
Coach Johnson has no lack of enthusiasm and enjoys a solid relationship with his players. I am hoping his coaching style proves a winning on this season. The WCC is very competitive and the road won't be easy.
