Lmu15 - you’re pretty much right on the screen thing. I really don’t think Coach is pushing true screens. The guys are much more intent on their post-screen action than they are on the screen itself. It’s with such alarming consistency that it has to be a coaching thing.
We know we’re saddled with a very so-so team. Not totally devoid of talent but nothing that makes you sit up and take notice. Now, the thing is, you can win with so-so talent. You won’t win a national championship but you can win more than you lose and represent your school well. IF, IF, IF … the Coach can institute things that help the players overcome their talent deficits. 1. Vary your offense. If you have great players, you can have them run the same thing every time down court. Their talent will prevail. BUT when you don’t have that talent level, Coach has to get incentive. Don’t be predictable. Move players around. Set screens. We have shooters but they need help. Set screens for them!! 2. On defense, teach anticipation. Our guys are always behind the curve because they don’t see what’s coming. Our guys watch the hall and ignore what’s going on behind them
I could go on. It the second half is starting

I would love to know what nbd thinks the solution is because I feel like LMU has tried so many different things but nothing has stuck. What is the fox for LMU bball nbd?

The fix is hiring a coach who has very good Xs and Os, but isn’t so boring that he can’t energize the fan base. The Coach has to have excellent recruiting connections. Good luck finding that guy to Coach here.
However I keep telling everyone that no top kid is going to show up on his own and change the program. As a teacher of this generation, getting kids to step out of comfort zones and single-handedly do something remarkable like boost a dormant program isn’t happening unless people with the bucks can show that NIL money. No Hank and Bo are coming. Especially with a high school gym. Build a new arena or forget about it.
Craig Pintens really blew it with Madness at Midnight. All o saw were social media pics. What was that. Were there like 100 students there? Good grief. LMU may be a D2 program in 5-7 years if they do nothing. Pintens needs to open the wallet and at least hire a musical act to show up,

I agree, but think a boring coach who is good with Xs and Os is good. The only thing that will energize this fan base is a consistently good team. Students don't show up for CSJ who is supposed to be the personality/culture guy

It seems like this expectation hasn’t happened or will never happen though. I feel like I see the same comments with every single coach we’ve gotten. Here is a wonder…did Portland just find lighting in a bottle? They all of a sudden have a team that can compete…what gives??? How is Portland a better destination than LA???

Legans is a legit coach with a proven record at D1 level, something we haven't had since?

But I’m tired of cheering for a lowly loser down in the dumps program for twenty plus years. That’s all My gut tells me this is a funding and dollars/cents issue first and foremost.

CSJ said something along the lines of "LMU hasn't hired 5 consecutive bad coaches before me, there is a fundamental issue with the culture we need to change" - which I agree with. We don't just get unlucky with bad coaches and recruits, something is in the LMU water. As for this team, the offense is just too stagnant, and our bigs have no idea how to roll after a screen. You create driving line and open shots after the second and third action of a motion offense, we run our motion one time and then watch the man with the ball - this is something that coaching should fix at halftime.

Second half was way better - really cut down on the TOs and rebounded better - not going to win any games going 3-21 from three but there was a nice stretch in the second half where the ball movement was better and you can tell they played with more urgency, now they just need to figure out how to do that for 40 minutes.

Why do we play Issanza so few minutes? He's our best matchup with their bigs.
The refs called ticky tack fouls on both sides all game, but it was both ways.
3-21 from 3 tonight. Very few transition points. However, we had some moments of great team defense.
UCI is a good team, but we made them look better than they are.

After being down by 20 points at halftime, and Leaupepe going to the bench with his fourth foul early in the second half, last season we would’ve lost this game by 30 points.
Nice to see this team show some heart and hang in there. As mentioned earlier, now we need to play that way for 40 minutes.
Go Lions.

And we need to remember that two seasons ago Douglas earned All-WCC honorable mention honors.
If he can come back and be even 75% of the player he was, he would be one of our best players.

That's a great point, any know what Dameane's status is? Lamaj and Graham had good efficient games tonight off the bench. If Ahrens doesn't pick it up offensively I'd play those guys more.

I like to use the website below to keep track. It’s a version of Ken Pom but free! We have a high offensive efficiency, but a low defensive efficiency. Not sure what kind of team we can be when we are on opposite ends of the spectrum! barttorvik.com/conf.php?conf=WCC
