Hard played game. The Broncos have some very good players. If they had a good PG, they could make some real noise. They have all the other parts; but without a quality PG to orchestrate the action, those parts don’t add up to where they ought to be.
We probably win this game in Gersten. Slow starts in both halves really made it hard. Other than Shelton, no one played very well. But Santa Clara’s consistently tough defense had a lot to do with that.
Coach Stan is an outstanding PR guy and has his guys frankly playing above their weight. But he really needs to study up on the Xs and Os. We could’ve won this game but the guys need some help getting easy looks. The guys are having to battle for every basket. I love all the fight they show, but Coach could do more to help them pick up a couple easy baskets.
Ah well. At least there wasn’t an emotional let down after the St Mary’s game. There’s a reason these two teams are so close in the national rankings. The Broncos played well and we came up one basket short.
I take heart in reading articles and blogs regarding next Thursday’s game. Zag nation is calling it a “big game.” While they expect to win, they’re apprehensive. THAT hasn’t been the case in … like forever!!

Agree with the comment that we probably win this game in Gersten, considering some of the calls. On another note, think we officially have to admit we're underachieving our talent slightly by playing to our competition. Of course, this doesn't take anything away from our heroic wins, but imagine I told you before the season that we'd beat Gonzaga, St. Mary's and BYU but lose to USD, Pacific and Santa Clara. We've overachieved in some of our wins, but how on Earth are we 3-2 against the big three and 4-4 otherwise?

I’ll agree that the refereeing wasn’t very good. It’s tough to call games when both teams are playing aggressively, but there were a number of egregious misses. Those bad calls went both ways. LMU didn’t lose because of refereeing.
I’ll also agree that the Lions have lost several games they simply should not have lost if they had played with the intensity they’ve shown in the Gonzaga, st Mary’s, and Nevada games. Unfortunately, consistency is a huge problem with (young) college players. Consistency is a problem everywhere. Right now I’m watching BYU give Gonzaga fits - the same BYU team that just lost to last place Pepperdine.
Santa Clara is a good team. I heard Coach Few say over a month ago that Santa Clara is in the same ranks as st Mary’s and Gonzaga. I agree. Don’t put them in the same class as San Diego, etc.

And we’re going to be in even more trouble for 3rd or 4th place if byu pulls off this upset.

Looks like the Zags have it. But BYU sure made it interesting!

Was at the game - first game I have gone to since the pandemic. We absolutely dominated on the boards but just couldn't make a shot, if we had just an average day shooting we might have won by 10. Podziemski was the best player on the court yesterday and is basically the reason they won, he carries them like Shelton carries us.

Podziemski really carries their team. I think Shelton was better because Podziemski had more help. Shelton was close to a one-man show. The Lions couldn’t hit their threes because the Broncos were playing aggressive defense. Other than Shelton (who can create space), the Lions simply had very few clear looks.

Observations: Alex had a rough night with 3 offensive fouls going hard to the basket and then fouling Podziemski on a 3 late which really hurt, but I can't really fault him for it as his offensive fouls were the result of his being aggressive and trying to force the action. Physicality and aggressive play has become our calling card and is definitely preferred to a more passive approach. Also - Keli was an absolute beast on the boards.

Besides Shelton, the other eight players combined to go 9 of 37 from the field (24%).
It’s truly remarkable that we only lost by two points.
Love the effort, play like that moving forward and we should be fine.
