Advanced metrics guru Bart Torvik has helped come up with a stat called PORPAGATU! (PRPG!). While the acronym looks messy, it simply measures how many more points per game a player creates than a replacement player would, while taking one’s usage into account.
Drew Timme 5.5 Cam Shelton 5.4 Brandin Podziemski 5.3
CRAZY!!!! Timme has been underwhelming this season, but I think with Cam being in every game this year, and with the type of wins he has single handedly carried in his back, he should be the front runner

Great stats. When considering intangibles, most notably, supporting cast, as well as an individual's role in their team's success, Cam was more valuable to his team than Drew, and to a lesser extent, Brandin. I think Cam will win it and it might not even be close.

Team’s overall success is another intangible.

Cam Shelton took what Brandon Brown and James Batemon started and turned it up a notch (in terms of score first PGs over the past decade)
Shelton is a great story, and while many LMU fans are aware of Sheltons’s role as a player on Chino Hills, hence his connection to Eli Scott, Cam spent time under legendary SGV coach Mike Leduc. Leduc, some of you might know was coach at Glendora where he had Tracy Murray , Cameron Murray and Casey Jacobsen. Legendary stuff out here in these parts of SoCal since it’s not typically the place where pro athletes are made. Cam really got an old school, great high school coach experience and it has carried over into his college career. My question is what happened last year!? I Guess we were right… the ball was locked into Eli’s hands too much.

Next questions is…did he already use his COVID year? What is this team going to look like next year?

Cam has just been on another level this season. Last I checked he is #15 in the country for PPG.

Next questions is…did he already use his COVID year? What is this team going to look like next year? Next year’s team is going to look very, very different. Assuming no one transfers, here are the scholarship holdovers: PG - Anderson SG - Stephens, Nobles, Taitz SF - Lewis PF - Merkviladze C - Issanza, Graham Four-star forward Aaron McBride from Centennial is the only committed freshman. He’s supposed to be good but only time will tell “how good.” That leaves 4 openings, and in today’s world it would be unusual to not lose any players to the transfer portal. We know that Coach Stan prefers older players so I fully expect to see him go after some guys in the transfer portal that he expects to be starters. The whole roster building approach has changed drastically in the past couple years. The days of crafting a roster with a handful of freshmen each year who you expect to build into a solid team in a couple years as you develop their talents are gone. You simply lose too many players to the transfer portal each year; AND a coach now has access to a huge “buffet” of proven players each year who he can entice to transfer. In my mind he has to find someone who can assume Sheldon’s role of team leader. Anderson adds spark with his athleticism but he makes way too many mistakes to be “the guy.” So Number One Priority is a point guard who can run the team, and hopefully be a good one-on-one defender. Number Two Priority is a small forward who can score and be counted on to guard other small forwards that can score for their teams. That was supposed to be Douglas this year and his absence is what kept the team from truly challenging as a top team. Lewis hasn’t shown me that he has what it takes to fill this key position. Number Three - another 6’10” or better player who can protect the rim. Whether Coach Stan has the same priorities I don’t know. But I do know that losing all but one impact player (Anderson) at the 1-4 positions means next year’s squad will carry a very different look.

Nice breakdown Winter. First question-any chance Keli uses his Covid year and comes back? I kind of doubt it but, by all accounts, his experience at LMU has been very positive so.... maybe. Second question - Noah Taitz? Will the former 4 star be be healthy and, if so, what will he bring to the table. His high school/club film is very impressive but his injury history is dicey. He also doesn't appear to be that strong and physical. It would be great if he could bring the dynamic shooting and skills he showed in those films to complement Jalin at shooting guard. Completely agree that top priority will be a quality point guard. I actually think this will be very doable. There are lots of solid guards around the country who might be #2 on the depth chart and would love to come play and be featured in the Lion's up-tempo pick and roll offense (any prospect is going to get an eyeful of Cam Shelton highlights). It's likely that it will be a seasoned player who is ready to go but the new landscape it's also possible that we might get a shot at a talented high school player (St. Bernard's Tyler Rollison?) wary of going to a big program and being aced out by a top portal player. We've gone after guys like this in the past and don't end up landing them but times they are a changing. I also agree that we need a rangy wing who can shoot and break down his defender one on one from the wing as well as play lock down D. This will be tougher to get. Everyone wants that guy (see Strawther, Julian). Maybe we get a shot at Fairfax's Darius Carr who just got his release from New Mexico State who program is imploding. I agree that Lamaj isn't that guy but his defensive abilities, vision, passing ability will make him a key player next year (and hopefully in the WCC tourney this year). After that, let's consider our returning post players and identity what they give us and what they lack and what type of player would complement our current trio. With Rick, we get an excellent rim protector with very a limited offensive toolbag. Rick should improve on both ends of the floor in all facets with continued off-season work but I don't see him ever being a go-to post-up on the block guy. Michael brought great energy and was often fantastic on the offensive boards and with his uncanny put-back buckets. He needs to get stronger which will help his D and possibly develop a baby hook to contribute more on offense. Finally, we have Alex who had some real nice moments both shooting the three ball and with taking it to the basket. Mostly though, his game was characterized by a lack of consistency (bad misses/charging fouls/turnovers). He as also a liability on defense not for lack of effort - just a step slow and sometimes has his head on a swivel. I don't mean to be harsh with Alex and I think he will be better next year but I don't see him filling the role of the big we need. So, what do we need? With Keli leaving, we need a 6'8" to 6'9" player who can be at least a threat at the post in the offensive set. This player will need to be stronger than Michael and more agile defensively than Rick. Our D involves lots of switches so we need a guy with decent lateral foot speed but with enough strength so as not to get backed down to the basket. Aside from the height requirement, I'd say we need Keli. Ha! Finally, we have Sniper. We know he can shoot and he will get stronger. I liked his energy on D and look for him to develop better ball handling skills and maybe the ability to drive and score when the 3 isn't there. It's going to be interesting for sure. The portal landscape is so competitive. I think the recent fan energy at Gersten should improve our chances of landing a player who likes our school and program but had heard from other coaches that home games were poorly attended etc. We know that coach Stan won't get out worked by many on the recruiting trail. And there won't be many coaches who will be more passionate about their vision. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

There's a community college wing we might be able to get, former huge recruit from the area. Goes by David Elliott IV. Could be a great pickup for us in the next few years.
What's that? We already had him? Well, sh*t.
