Good article about Teel in the New York Daily News today: www.nydailynews.com/sports/high_school/2008/05/13/2008-05-13_vernon_teel_explains_his_commitment_to_l.htmlVernon Teel explains his commitment to Loyola-Marymount It's been awhile since Vernon Teel has had options. He's long been a top hoops prospect; in 2004, Teel earned an all-star berth at the famed ABCD summer basketball camp in New Jersey. Yet when Teel graduated from Flushing HS in 2005, he had few suitors and landed at Laurinburg Prep in North Carolina, where he worked to improve his grades to NCAA Clearinghouse standards. When Teel left Laurinburg in the spring of 2006 with his diploma in tow, he had fewer choices. The NCAA had deemed Laurinburg a "diploma mill," declaring that courses taken there wouldn't count toward improving a student's eligibility. The 6-4 guard wound up attending LIU during the 2006-2007 season, but he never suited up; he continued to clean up his grades. The Northeast Conference never felt right to Teel; he believed he could play at a higher level and transferred to the Globe Institute, a Manhattan junior college that spring. This past season, Teel left Globe for Chipola Community College, a top JUCO in Florida. After averaging 8 points per game and finally meeting Division I standards, the 20-year-old sat back as Kentucky, Mississippi State and Oklahoma all came calling. Last Wednesday, he committed to West Coast Conference school Loyola-Marymount in Los Angeles. Here, he explains his decision: "California is nice, and there's always something to do. I can't be in a boring city; I need to have stuff around to do. Chipola was boring, but my Division I school has to be like New York. "Coach (Bill Bayno) said he's going to use me as a point guard. He really likes my scoring ability, and he says that won't go to waste, but he says at the next level, I'm going to have to be a one. So I'm going to work on that. "The level of competition is just right here. At a bigger school, I might have had to sit the bench. I can play here. That's what bugged me about LIU; I was sitting and watching them lose. When I got to another school, I didn't want to watch. "But I went to LIU because I was desperate, and they were the only ones who would take me. This time, I sat down with my family. "This is what I wanted."
