One aspect of LMU coaching that has driven me crazy over the years deals with minutes played. Back in the late 70s and through the 80s, our coaches (Jacobs, Goorjian, Westhead) played 7-8 man rotations, with the best players (McCloskey, Antoine, Goorjian, Smith, McKenzie) playing 38 minutes a game. Even during Westhead's fast-paced track meets, he would only go 2-3 deep on the bench and play the best players 33-35 minutes per game.
Other than Jim Williamson, we haven't had a player average 35 minutes per game since the mid 1980s. And Williamson is 5-foot, 10-inches and 150 pounds dripping wet. Why is this? In Tention's best year, we played our best ball when Worthy, Martin, and Knight played 36-38 minutes in league. It drives me nuts to see well-conditioned 19-year-old's playing 27 minutes. It is ridiculous.
With my rant complete, does anyone know what Bayno's rotation was like at UNLV? I cannot find their stats from his era with minutes played. I'm obviously hoping he is willing to play his best players 35-plus minutes, with a short rotation on the bench. Rebelfan, I'm sure you have a good feeling for Bayno (and Good's) thought process for his rotation. Obviously, he won't want to quell any player's idea for playing time, but has anyone heard what type of rotation he expects to display? Thanks.
