Well, from what I learned at the womens' game tonight, the athletic department doesn't know what Bayno's exact condition is. The one thing that I was told was that there is a 0 percent chance that this is anything related to his "past."
So, it would seem that the treatment of this ailment is the bottom line, since if he recovers, I don't see Bayno not wanting to come back guns blazing.
Someone get Dr. Gregory House on the case!

I hope Coach Bayno realizes that we don't expect him to build our program in a couple of weeks. I'm really excited about the enegry and hope that he has brought to our program. However, I know this will be a difficult year. I know we have a great recruiting class and transfers waiting to play. We will be just fine, I just hope Coach Bayno understands that.

I personally think Coach Bayno is worried about his stats this year. Not sure how it works, but does losses that Good piles up in Bayno's absence count against Bayno's record? Bayno's winning percentage as a college coach was absolutely solid. in the .600 range. With this season, I suspect the two big losses in the World Vision Classic against UC Davis and UW-M shook him at his core. Reality set in. Stress set in. And it is up to that person on how they handle the stress. Some deal with it. Others deal with it in other ways.
I still think there is an underlying story about this leave of absence. I'm not sure if I can be like that Daily Breeze writer and take Husak's words to the bank. I KNOW that Rodney Tention can't. Remember the "confidence" Husak had in Tention per the Los Angeles Time article last season. That was with about 5 games left in the season to play. Tention was fired two days after the season. Don't bank on Husak's words these days. Husak decided on taking a risk and this is a painful reminder to him. If Bayno does not come back, Husak will probably be given the door. Husak knows that after going to the Board of Trustees to approve the $2 million Bayno contract. Husak's hands are tied. Husak may be the next individual diagnosed with a "medical condition" because he cannot sleep at night. His pay check rest with Bill Bayno.
Timeline of this "leave of absence" is quite suspecious. My sources confirm that Husak knew about Bayno's "medical condition a few weeks ago." Interesting how we got throught the National Letter of Intent signing period (Nov. 12-17) and the Notre Dame "money" game without any details surfacing from the administration. Bayno had to be out of practice on Wednesday and Thursday or there was no good "story" to tell FOX SPORTS Prime Ticket and the media at the Notre Dame game. You could not just have Bill dissappear on Friday. LMU had to say it was a "extreme illness" and you could not say that unless he was out a couple days before. Cannot have Paul Sunderland of FOX Sports be talking about Bayno's leave of absence when LMU is trying to ressurrect the program. President Lawton needed to use the halftime to get some great publicity out there on LMU and its athletics. Also, I don't know how it works in academia, but it is suspecisious how Husak and LMU Human Resources granted Bayno a "leave of absence" on a Sunday. In Corporate America that timing cannot fly. Timing to the press release was another orchestrated event. Sunday is when limited media outlets get stories. Not to mention how generic that press release read...very very broad with no details. Also, I find it very odd that a mass e-mail was sent to the student population about the Bayno "leave of absence." Professors go on leave of absences, but there is never a mass e-mail sent out to all students. Is the administration trying to squash things (probably doing the opposite as speculation on a broad PR release takes hold) or they setting up things for all involved to take next piece of news a little better?
LMU Athletics and communication departments are playing a high sake's poker game with its fans, alumni, boosters, and athletes. I just hope they have the card to present when they need to show the hand. A joker card will not do. It needs to be Bayno in the flesh.
I am reading between the lines on the LMU communications front and I just want to put our administration on notice. The students, fans, alumni, boosters, and athletes are not ignorant. We will keep monitoring the situation and hopefully "Bayno Returns to the Sidelines' will be coming through on a press release from LMU Basketball Media Relations person, John Schaffer.
Just my thoughts on the slowly surfacing situation.

I think the last thing in the world Bayno is worrying about are his stats! This is just a absurd thing to say.
He is a high energy guy has put a tremendous amount of pressure on himself to build our program. He has worked day and night like a dog since he got this job, not slept well, not eaten right and worried endless about expectations.
I can't say I agree with how the athletic department has handled the situation.

ironlions:
We can agree that Bayno is a coach that wants to win. I think he is stressed out that he cannot win right away. That was what is behind my "stats" statement. Bayno is as intense as they come. I'm not knocking the coach for that. I'm not saying he is ducking the games or anything. He is intense and wants to win. Period.
I need some clarity on your statement "I can't say I agree with how the athletic department has handled the situation." You don't agree with me or you don't agree with how the athletic department is handling the situation? I definitely respect your opinion and what to clarify your statement.

Lionspride:
First and foremost - please don't insult Bill Bayno & the entire LMU community with comments such as "I personally think Coach Bayno is worried about his stats this year." He has earned more respect then that statement.
Second - your entire post reads more conspiratorial then The Da Vinci Code. Try a bit more Acoms razor.
It seem rather simple to me.
The athletic department is not sharing information because: A) they legally can't. There are laws that govern privacy in the work place and Bill Bayno is still an employee of LMU - so, those laws apply. And / Or B) Bill asked for privacy and the athletic department is giving it to him.
Yes, it keeps the fans in the dark and confused - but we will just have to get used to it. What Bill wants, Bill gets, and I respect that.
In other matters, I believe the communications about this issue have been slow and vague because the AD staff is trying to get on top of the situation themselves. They take the information they have, they figure out what they can / should say about it, they talk amongst themselves to get everyone to sign off on what they are going to say, then they release it. The Athletic Department is not CNN - they are not a 24-hour operation set up to break news. Once they know what they can say and figure out how to say it, they release it. Even on a Sunday.
And the simplest answer to all of the actions by LMU is that they don't have any good answers so they are not giving any. They don’t know the extent of Bill’s illness, they don’t know if he will get better, they don't know when / if he will be back, the don't know who will be the coach in the long term if Bill does not come back, they don't know what will happen to the players (who will stay and who will go), and most importantly, they don't know how they can best help Bill. They just don't know.
Bill Husak has never had much of a problem making leadership decisions - so I am going to guess that once a decision is makeable - it will be made. (then we will be told what it is)
You may not like this simpler truth (grand conjecture is much more fun) but in the end of the day what the fan wants isn't really important. Bill Husak has a basketball team and Bill Bayno to worry about (not to mention the 300 something other student athletes and 15 other sports) - what the fan wants is way on the bottom of the list.
I have no idea if my theory is correct. I have only the same information you have at this point. (Heck, you could be right and Bill Bayno is in the mountains having Sasquatch’s baby as we speak). But, I pose it as a much simpler explanation of all the happenings inside of that giant eyesore we call Gerstein Pavilion.
We are on a need to know basis, and right now, we don’t need to know - no matter how much that hurts our ego.
Carry on.

Let Bayno be and don't speculate on what could have happened to him. He deserves privacy and respect because he has earned it. Basketball is never more important than someone's health/life.

Very well said stillalion. There isn't really anything more to know. Bayno is sick, took leave because the stress and no one is sure when/if he returns. Getting any gossipy details in between doesn't help us at this point. That's it.

Bottom line from experience is that stress can play a heck of a toll on the immune system. Walking into this job, which has been in a 20 year rebuilding cycle, is a tad different than coaching a school with a national title. Bill just needs some time to relax and hopefully get his mind right, not to mention for whatever ailment to run its course.

I think this is a very important issue because we JUST hired Bayno. I love the guy, but if you can't make it through more than 3 games, you shouldn't have been hired. Husak, if Bayno doesn't come back, made a horrible choice for the school, a choice that affects all of us. I understand Bayno is under stress, but he is a college basketball coach. There are many more people in leadership positions under much more stress than Bayno(Ex. Ben Bernanke). We sunk a lot of money into him as a university that someone must answer for. I would like the athletics department to be a little more upfront. I understand the privacy issues, and we will all find out the truth in time. In the business world, most people work through sicknesses. This is just an interesting situation and we would all love to know the truth, very similar to Lute Olsen last year(not inferring a divorce situation here). This is just a horrible time for this to happen to us as we all seemed to think we were on a path upwards from the pits. I hope he is better and back soon for all of us.

Lionboy -
To quote the great Kenny Rogers: "There will be time enough for counting when the dealin's done".
In the near future we will know the full extent of the story (these things don't stay secret for long) and when we do we can talk about blame (if any exists - which I doubt). I will speculate that both Bill's acted in good faith during the entire hiring process.
And to all the young Lion fans out there - Welcome to LMU!

Stilalion:
You are completely out of touch with reality and how college athletics works. The dumbest thing you mentioned was "in the end of the day what the fan wants isn't really important. Bill Husak has a basketball team and Bill Bayno to worry about (not to mention the 300 something other student athletes and 15 other sports) - what the fan wants is way on the bottom of the list."
You better believe that the fan, booster, alumni is extremely important, if not vital to the program. Definitely not the bottom of the list. Boosters and donors makes the program run. If Husak wants to ignore fans and boosters, he will definitely be asked to leave if Bayno does not return. Without that monetary support from boosters and alumni, the University would not have enough to fund coaches pay. Get a clue please. NO one coach, no AD is higher than the team, program, or department. Don't sacrifice the team for one man. It is clearly obvious that Husak is at the whim of Bill Bayno in this situation. Lionboy said it best. And I took it one step further. If Bayno does not return, Husak is OUT.
Please don't be naive about the timing of the "leave of absence." Monitor the press releases of Corporate America for a one month period. 99% of Sunday morning press releases give bad news. The administration probably had that release ready to go days before. It was obvious that Husak & Co. wanted to slip this under the radar. That "leave of absence" was granted on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday of last week. Husak held that bag of info until after the Notre Dame game (the money and publicity game of the year for LMU....probably the biggest game in 3-5 years at Gersten...arguably...19 years...the biggest game in Husak's tenure). If Husak was running a public company, shareholders would sue him and the company for non-timely release of information. We were all sitting in Gersten on Friday while Husak full well knew that he had already granted Bayno a "leave of absence." Cash was flowing in the tillies at Gersten while Husak sat on the egg. He released the information when it was extremely convenient for him.
Go ahead and feel sorry for Husak. He must be accountable for all his actions. There is no way in hell that a "leave of absence" was approved on a Saturday or Sunday. Especially at LMU when the bookstore closes at 5PM on a Friday or the library that opens at 11AM on Sunday. You are right with one thing. LMU is not open 24/7 like CNN. No Human Resource approval would have been received on a Saturday or Sunday. That approval was granted earlier. That is my point.
As I clarified in a response to ironlions...the "stat" comment was made as Bill is very intense and is accustomed to winning. And I applaud him for that. I just find that maybe it is the stress of losing that may have caused him to stress and who he handles the stress has caused this "leave of absence."
This is one man's opinion on this slowly developing situation.

Lionspride, you are way out of line with attacking Husak and the athletic department for not giving the fans the whole truth. First of all there is a set of laws called HIPPA that restricts businesses from releasing medical conditions about employees, customers, or patients. The LMU communities hands are tied. I have worked for a prominate university in the Los Angeles area. When I spoke with a donor or alum and I heard of a illness they have or have had I was not allowed to talk about it or put it into any reports.
Secondly, just because the basketball team is the only thing that some fans live for Bill Husak must focus on the other sports and student athletes and I think it was a smart move to release the report on sunday. It keeps bad press from LMU and does not hurt our future recruiting as much. Also as the leader of an athletic department, you are on the clock 24/7. You would be pretty naive to think he was not. Husak is the "CEO" of the athletic department.
