Got this e-mail from the school this morning. . . Get well soon Bill!
November 23, 2008 University Communication: Athletics Announcement Regarding Head Coach Bayno
Athletics has announced that Bill Bayno is taking a leave of absence, effective immediately, as the head coach of the LMU men's basketball team. Assistant Coach Max Good will serve as acting head coach during Bayno's leave.
"Recently, I was diagnosed with a serious medical condition, in part, related to the stress and anxiety of head coaching," says Bayno. "It will require treatment which will force me to take a leave of absence. It is unfortunate and I feel badly for the University, the coaching staff and most of all my players and their families, all of whom I will miss very much. I ask for privacy for myself and my family and I thank you for your prayers and support."
"The LMU Family's greatest concerns are for the wellbeing of Bill and the team," said LMU Athletics Director Dr. William Husak. "His health is the most important thing he needs to focus on right now. He has done great things in his brief time at LMU and has earned the love and respect of all. I have asked Max Good to be our acting head coach during this time period and I have great confidence that Max and the rest of the staff will continue the process Bill began. All of us at LMU are concerned for Bill's wellbeing and he and his family are in our thoughts and prayers."

I hope to see Coach Bayno back on our sideline soon. Hopefully he will recover swiftly. Depressing news with so much optimism in our program. I have faith Max Good will do a great job until Bayno is back to lead or Lions this season.

Besides wishing and hoping for Bill's best interest and his well being, I am going to make a statement about LMU's administration. I have been drinking the Kool-Aid all summer long, but I need to take a stand on this communications/publicity issue.
The way that Press Release is worded, just creates intense scrutiny on how LMU carries its business. It creates SPECULATION. A Sunday press release is NEVER, and I quote NEVER a good sign. If you are in publicity for a company, a Sunday press release is one in which you hope all media outlets overlook or are not their to see pass across the Sports Wires. There is always something more underlying a Sunday press release. If it is a medical condition of cancer or something completely unforunate and not self induced, a Monday press release would create a better rallying cry of support. I don't think many people in this country get medical records back from their doctor on Saturday or Sunday morning or have a request for a "leave of absence" approved by your boss and company HR on a Saturday. The "condition" was known for some time but was avoided being addressed by LMU administration until the "money" game on Friday night. According to sources....Bill Bayno has been receiving "medical care" for the past "few weeks." The press release had to come out today as it would be strange if Bill didn't make the trip with the team to Wagner for tomorrow's game and then Arkansas-Little Rock this coming Saturday.
LMU needs to play it straight to its players, fans, and alumni. Privacy is never upheld in these circumstances no matter who requests it. LMU Communications needs to simply take a stand. I thought it was kind of odd that Husak and his wife had a worried look on their face on Friday when the team was only down by 3 with 7 mins. to play. Also, what was wierd was a "huddle" of President Lawton and Husak in the northwestern corner of Gersten after the Fox Sports Prime Ticket interview. Both looked worried, both were "covering" a situation. I didn't hear the Fox Sports interview as I was in the stands. I wish I would have to piece some more pieces together. Something is up and I think LMU is keeping things at bay. God bless them if they can. But, there will be always be a beat writer trying to make a name for himself who will get the goods. For the University and its program's sake, I hope this is keep at bay and we pull through this. However, if the bay is broken it may do more damage to our program. Most of the time, it is better to look out for the masses than one individual.

Wow, talk about history repeating itself!
Who took over as interim coach for Bayno at UNLV.
None other than Max Good.
He had a 13-9 record for the Rebels as coach, iirc.
Best of luck to "Shooter" and thoughts and prayers with William Bayno.

Its been quite a gutting day. Being a Lions fan its hard not to think about the worst case scenario, but I'm trying to be positive. My guess is that Coach Bayno has been working day and night and because of the stress and fatigue his body had to call a time out. If I was able to coach to talk to Coach today I would tell him he is doing an unbelievable job...just relax. Don't worry about the losses this year...as LMU fans we are veterans of the rough season. There is amazing talent waiting on the bench and a stellar recruiting class coming in. We know things will better next season and beyond. Take care of your self Coach and come back when your ready. The team is in great hands with Coach Good.

Well, as a UNLV alum, fan, and passive Bayno supporter, I wish Bayno all the best on a speedy recovery. However, I would be remiss not to mention the fact that Bayno's statement on the matter was slightly suspicious given his well documented history of alchohol abuse:
"Recently, I was diagnosed with a serious medical condition, in part, related to the stress and anxiety of head coaching," says Bayno. "It will require treatment which will force me to take a leave of absence."
Admin Edit: See below
Good luck and God speed to both your program and Coach Bayno.
