Just got back from Tucson after watching last night’s game in person. I sat right behind the coaches. Our boys did a great job the first 10-15 minutes. The lack of subs wore us down in the second half as was to be expected.
But I was very excited to see how our players are developing. Max Good was relentless from beginning to end, with his demand for excellence. He did not let them stop despite the extended number of minute each player had to endure. LeRon Armistead player all 40 minutes. Jared Dubois complete shut down the top forward in the country limiting him to just 10 points and 0 point in the first minutes of the game. Corey nailed some three pointers. Sweezy kept battling guys 4-6 inches taller than him. We only had 3 subs, one of which was a walk on who got some good playing time in.
They brought Hamilton on the trip hoping that he would get a medical clearance to play. That did not come. In fact he is getting a PET scan today for a possible spinal stress fracture. If it is positive then he will be out the season too.
What was most clear is the caliber and quality of coaching that is going on. Everyone misses Bayno, but give him credit, Bill did a great job of getting Max Good and Mike Sholl in there, along with Levy and Carter. All of them were constantly coaching…no sign of let up, or let down. It was a barrage of teaching, especially from coach Good, that I haven’t seen since becoming a season ticket-holder 20 years ago (including the Westhead Days).
These freshmen and one soph are getting the immersion experience of their young lives, and thankfully we have the quality of coaches to help them use this experience. This season is not a write off…it is the first step to some great years to come.
Anyone who know me knows that I am not one to mince words. When something is bad I am known to be the first to identify it and expose it to the powers that be. On the other hand what I witnessed last night in a 27 point loss, had me standing and applauding. I can’t wait to see the next phase of development at the Wyoming game.
