After observing the scene at the start of this past season, I wrote this email to Dr Husak and Coach Good on January 13. Dr Husak sent a nice response and forwarded the message to Coach Good. My observations still stand today and Coach Good has fulfilled all the objectives I set forth for him (excepting Vinson), but he did his best in that regard also.
Go Lions!!!
For Coach Good (and Athletic Director Husak)
Congratulations to Coach Good on your
appointment as Head Coach and best
wishes for the season and the future.
And thanks for the excellent job you
have been doing to keep the players
motivated and playing to the best of
their ability this year in light of
difficult circumstances.
I am a multi-year season ticket holder
who lives in the community and enjoys
immensely attending the LMU games. While
Rodney Tension started like dynamite
with the players inherited from the
previous regime and we had a great run
with the Worthy-Knight combination,
2007-2008 ended in disappointment with
the team seeming to move in the wrong
direction.
Welcome to Bill Bayno this year who gave
us great hope and recruited well but
also lost a lot of talent to transfers.
What an exciting prospect we fans were
expecting. Then the injuries, Sutton,
Dedrich, then Hamilton, all apparently
for the season. Then Teel who led our
scoring until he was injured.
What a challenge for the coach and
apparently, unfortunately, the stress
was too much for Coach Bayno. With
dissapointment, we noticed his absence
from the Notre Dame game - an exciting
contest played well by LMU.
Conngratulations on the job you did in
that game to keep us in contention (and
to DuBois for his defense). Coach Bayno
had done a great job until then and did
a great job recruiting next year's class.
You said these guys came to play for
Coach Bayno and they came from winning
programs. Your challenge is to keep the
momentum Coach Bayno started and retain
the talents of his A-class Freshman
class on the LMU roster, including the
redshirt transfers, and, if possible,
have the three new players fulfill their
written commitment to play for LMU next
year. This may not be simple but as you
noted "great players make great coaches"
and these guys are our key to the
future. Retaining this talent must be
your primary focus, oops, along with
keeping the current depleted team
motivated and playing well in the
current challenging season. The return
of Teel will help a lot - is he back
this week?
I liked our small lineup in the
Pepperdine game - Kanne and Sweezy
deserve more playing time and, who
knows, Kanne may (with your endorsement
of confidence) start making a larger
percentage of his excellent jumpers,
especially from three points. Sweezy is
a winner and a hard worker at all times
and it shows, despite his average
skills. We need his toughness out there.
We should have won the Seattle game but
could not with 2 for 18 shooting in the
second half (What's wrong with you
coach?). DuBois had a breakout game
versus CSUB with 39 and may be a
challenge to keep on the roster next
year - it will be worth your efforts in
this area. That was a great game and got
great fan support despite the season so
far. LMU fans are hungry. Armstead is
just discovering his potential and is
Mr. Steady who will only get better. The
leaper Kevin Young is a keeper and a
valuable role player on next year's
team. Gotta watch those 3 point shot
though - not his strong point which is
around the basket.
In any case, we LMU fans are hoping for
a better 2009-2010 when we are competing
for the WCC Championship. The talent is
lined up for the coming seasons, we need
to keep them in the LMU fold, and we are
hoping you - Coach Good - can build on
your prior record of success to bring
LMU back to the national spotlight in
the years ahead.
Sincerely
Bill Schnicke
PS if only Derich could make his layups!
