The women of the WCC are off to a good start, 8-3-2 this weekend. The Peppers have two wins over the Pac 12 Cal and Arizona LMU over #19 Texas and USD over USC away 3-1. All good for the rpi when it comes down to the NCAA 64. Portland beat Florida St and Santa Clara over S Jose St. BYU tied top twenty Washington. The WCC is going to be tough this year as always.

Portland number four, Santa Clara 16 USD 22 and Pep and LMU recieving votes. Keep beating the Pac 12 and they'll have to notice. There's more soccer on the west coast than just the p-12. www.nscaa.com/seniorRes.php?it=1578

Ladies notch another victory 3-0 over Long Island!
The Lions looked formidable. They had the majority of play and the best chances. The blackbirds made a charge early in the second half after falling back 2-0. The Lions defended after a couple of giveaways put them under pressure and turned back the attack.
At least three freshman saw substantial play. Benger, Medved and Bakker were all impressive.
The Lions are solid and moved the ball skillfully. It's early, but I think it's clear the team has improved from last year.
Rementer had a nice turn and shot for her goal. Martino got run over in the penaly box, an easy call for a penalty. Sanford converted to make it 3-0.
We'll have to watch how they do against the Peppers on Sunday. I think the blackbirds will have their hands full again.
Fresno here Sunday!

The Fresno Bulldogs were 9-9-5 last year but they made it to the NCAA tourney. They are dangerous and have six players scoring goals already this year. The Lions should be rested and ready for the Bulldogs. Fresno also notched a three -0 victory Friday, over USF.

Missed the game Sunday. The offense only forced two saves by Fresno. But a scoreless draw proves again you can't lose if you don't give up any goals. The peppers only beat Long Island 1-0 but improve to 4-0. WCC now 19-9-3!
The news this weekend though is that Portland lost 1-0 on the road at SDSU proving that Portland is vulnerable this year. Santa Clara, BYU, USD LMU and the Peppers all will be looking to unseat the dynasty!

The coach's poll dropped Portland from #4 to #8. Santa Clara is 16 and the Peps are now ranked at #24. USD receiving 64 votes and LMU getting 4. BYU is slow out of the blocks at 1-1-1

A tough match for the women to lose on Friday in double overtime 2-1. For their effort in the game they deserved more but in the end didn't get anything. It was a battle with both teams having momentum for periods of time. Rutgers played a very physical game, lots of pushing, holding and obstruction that for the most part the ref allowed. The winning goal was a good one, just when it looked like Rutgers was worn out they took the second overtime kickoff down the right and a blast from outside forced Jagger to leap and parry the ball away from the top corner. A great save, but the rebound came right to Rutgers and they put it right back on goal with a header to the opposite post before Jagger could recover.
Gilmer played well and her shot was a beauty. It seemed to be from about 30 yards and low to the near post. The keeper dove to cover the upright but it skipped in to tie the score at one apiece.
Rachel Fell didn't see any action. Hopefully she can return soon. The back four played well in her absence.
Looking at the box score the time of play is the first thing that jumps out. The Lions had 8 who played every minute, the eagles three. The Lions used 13 the eagles 22. That said it didn't appear the Lions were fatigued.

Linda Bakker had 2 goals and an assist. Bakker and Martino connected on the second goal nicely. When they really start clicking together, watch out, the goals will come in bunches. Bakersfield had a tough time penetrating the Lion defense, their best chances came in the last ten minutes after Coach had sent in the reserves. McGovern jumped on a loose ball after a corner to score LMU's third goal.

Portland dropped another one and now has three losses. Top Drawer still hasn't lost faith and still has them in their tournament selection with four other WCC teams! Sta Clara 17 BYU 20 Pep 24 (Port 32) and USD 41. Lots of trials ahead but I still like LMU's chances. LMU shows up at #31 on collegesoccer360.com in their composite ranking.

The upcoming match with Fullerton this Friday will provide some insights to our WCC race. The Titans also beat Long Island. They also scored three but gave up a goal. And they lost to both Pep and BYU by a score of 2-1. After Friday we'll see how the Lions compare.
SMU 3-2 comes in Sunday after playing UCLA on Friday. We face the Bruins the next Saturday on Sullivan Field.
