BYU Cougars
Record: 13 – 6 (losses to Long Beach State and Portland) WCC: 4 - 2
Roster/PPG
33 Nate Austin 6-11 245 F Senior 2.4 40 Jamal Aytes 6-6 235 F Sophomore N/A 3 Elijah Bryant 6-5 210 G Sophomore N/A 25 Jordan Chatman 6-5 195 G Freshman 2.4 5 Kyle Collinsworth 6-6 215 G Senior 14.9 21 Kyle Davis 6-8 225 F Junior 13.1 4 Nick Emery 6-2 185 G Freshman 14.5 1 Chase Fischer 6-3 190 G Senior 18.3 24 Davin Guinn 6-5 190 F Sophomore 0.0 12 Alan Hamson 7-2 210 C Freshman N/A 34 Jakob Hartsock 6-8 205 F Freshman 0.5 44 Corbin Kaufusi 6-10 255 C Sophomore 5.7 2 Zac Seljaas 6-7 215 G Freshman 8.1 31 Braiden Shaw 6-9 210 F Freshman 0.9 15 Jake Toolson 6-5 205 G Sophomore 3.9
The Cougars average 83.8 ppg and shoot 38.1% from 3 as a team! Two big men top their 3 point percentage – 6’8” JR F Kyle Davis at 56% and 6’7” F G Zac Seljaas at 54% plus their smaller guards score prolifically. Four players average double-digit scoring. So why are they only 4-2 in WCC play? Good question and Winter offered an opinion on Colinsworth’s “Jeckel and Hyde” play (my term). So lets hope Seniors Collinsworth and Fischer have off nights.
Our streak of winning when we score more than 70 points in a game may be in jeopardy on Thursday.
On the other hand, the Lions return from their first successful two-game sweep up north in 23 years and are brimming with confidence. Let’s disrupt the Cougars offense and keep Jacko in the game for the whole evening. And Haney, it’s time to find your Fullerton zone in Thursday’s game.
Gametime: Thursday, January 21, 8 pm at Gersten. TV: TWCSN, BYU TV (tape delay) – not on Lions streaming video.
Go Lions!

BYU's problems are more than just Collinsworth. They don't play good defense and their bigs get out-manuevered for rebounds by more active, smaller front court players. But I feel their biggest problem is when they start to feel the pressure. Their opponent gets a lead, or narrows a margin and gets close. The whole team starts to panic - first guy down the court with the ball jacks up whatever kind of shot he thinks he can get off. I get their fast paced style, but it gets them in trouble when they lose control of themselves.
That's why I said in my earlier post that we can't let them get into their groove. If we let them run and let them get some easy early baskets, they will play loose and bury us with proficient FG shooting. We have to get them worried -- then we have a chance. However, it's a slim chance. They have a lot more horses than we do, and I haven't seen what I consider to be very good 3-point defense from our Lions.
... and yes, we need Jacko. He's a lot more active than their bigs, but he HAS to avoid the silly fouls.

I agree. If we play great defense against this team we may have a fighting chance. I thought we played great defense against the last two teams. Keep Jacko out of foul trouble, keep David shooting, Haney on the side line.

I agree about swapping Humphries for Haney
G Brown G Humphries GF Tuach F Jocko F Johnson
I feel like this line up would have balance on both sides. Throw in Mornar Tutu Spiers Haney off the bench .

I don't think I would switch up the line up for no other reason than because we have won 2 games in a row, but I would expect to see Haney come out of the game sooner if he isn't hitting shots. Taking a player out of the starting line up either relaxes them so they start playing better, crushes their confidence, or has no effect. I don't know what category Haney falls into, but if a player's primary role is to be a shooter, and they are shooting 20-something% from three, how much longer can you have them playing 25+ minutes per night?
As for the BYU game, we are currently letting opponents shoot 40% from three on the season, we better hope we can hold BYU to that number. Also, I know all the statistics say we need to score 70+ and that we are better when we play more up-tempo, but one way to take a team like BYU out of their game is to crush them on the offensive boards and be patient once in a half court set. Nothing takes a team out of their rhythm on offense like getting some O-boards and making them play defense for a minute straight.
I don't see BYU losing two games in a row, but anything can happen, and a win on Thursday would be a huge confidence booster going forward and it would give us a chance for our first 4 game win streak since the 2011-12 season.

Thanks, 90045. I should be able to watch the game here in Colorado after a day of skiing!

Lions are 8 point underdogs vs the Cougars - Lions are bigger than Cougars, aren't they?

I really hope they at least keep it close, we have some good momentum going and you know the players are feeling confident, I'd hate for a 20+ point loss to end it. Hopefully luck is on our side tonight, because we are going to need it.

Lions plus 8 seems like a reasonable bet. That is if Adom can stay out of foul trouble and if Haney can get a few more of his shots to fall. I expect BYU to be very aware of Humphries. A win would be nice but we haven't beaten a team with a solid winning record this year and we seem to play somewhat better on the road. We have played some next tier up teams well on the road, notably Boise St. A larger home turn out hopefully some of our students will show up and help cheer them on. GO LIONS!!

lmu2015 - you are too humble (I hope). Two years ago we whipped the Cougars in Gersten with freshmen Evan Payne and Gabe Levin while AI was a senior by a nice margin. If we can rattle the Cougars' cage early, we have a decent shot at a win, not just beating the margin. If Jacko stays in the game, Haney shoots like Fullerton and Humphries and Mornar contribute - I'm assuming Brown will contribute his usual pesky scoring game and the other team members will play their part. Perhaps Herman can dunk a few and block out like no other. And Johnson will play his usual quiet reliable role as a core team player. Let's make our FTs also.
Go Lions!

The majority opinion on WCC Pick'em is on the Cougars - I'm a dissenter. Like Husky,

Last time we beat them was paynes coming out party, we will need a similar performance from someone other than brown and jacko if we want the same results. And brown should be too quick for anyone on BYU to guard, i know he won't have a problem drawing a second defender, our shooters just need to make shots.

Great start on offense, worried about the fouls.
