Perhaps because they have a very young squad: only 2 Seniors and 1 Junior on the roster? Of the upper classmen, only Zidek is in the top 6 scorers and he is #6. Perhaps, it is the Coach? Romar he has a reputation as a great recruiter but also an established reputation of not being able to use his talent to their potential. I think I heard that some young players debated going pro or playing for Romar. In particular, Mallette was one of these (I may be wrong here). The Waves have a 7 game losing streak right now and a winless WCC record but play San Diego Thursday before visiting Gersten. In the past, the Waves have been a thorn in our side especially in Malibu. Let’s win this one big. Let’s also keep and eye on any players that might be in the transfer portal after Romar gets canned after the season. They have some decent size there! Do they have an experienced PG worth considering? Gametime: Saturday, Jan 28, 8 pm in Gersten. Video: Bally Sports So Cal; WCC – out of area.

Lions are favored by 10. Will the Waves go all out for their first WCC win? Or can the Lions continue their fine play?

WCC Standings as of 7 pm Jan 28
Saint Mary’s 7-0 Gonzaga 7-1 LMU 5-3 Santa Clara 4-4 BYU 4-4 Pacific 4-4 USF 3-5 USD 3-5 Portland 3-6 Pepperdine 0-8
Still to play: Saint Mary’s – BYU USF-USD LMU-Portland
If the Gaels beat BYU (which I expect) and the Lions beat the Waves (which I expect/hope), the Lions will be a “solid” third place in the WCC, trailed by Santa Clara and the (much demeaned) Pacific with 4 losses each.
Things are close and our schedule ahead has challenges but I doubt the Lions will end in 9th place as the prognosticators forecast.
In any case, my main point is that tonite’s game is important to win

8 assists on our first 10 made shots, waves aren't a good defensive team and we are taking advantage of it.

Shelton cut to the basket and scored following a nice pass from I think Marble. That’s the first time we showed a lot of movement on offense in a while. Too much standing around. I think we’re going to need our defense to kick start our offense.
Up 5 with 15 left.

Lewis has missed a few shots at the rim, but he has played great defense and has shown some great athleticism while getting to the rim on offense. If it wasn't for all of the turnovers we would be up by almost 20 but our offensive rebounding is making up for it.

Nice win. Let's go beat BYU at their place next week. By the way, make sure you check on the highlights of the end of the BYU/St. Marys game. After having a very tough night, freshman Aidan Mahaney hit a huge shot in the final seconds.

It wasn’t particularly pretty but I’ll take the win. The Waves have some really good players and they’re much more athletic than the Lions. How Romar can turn that collection of athletic ball players into an 0-10 team is beyond me.
Really great to see Ahrens light it up. He can be such a difference maker. Hopefully tonight does wonders for his confidence.
Lewis is a stud. He’s just consistently short an inch or two. He had some strong moves tonight that turned into nothing because the shots were just short of where they needed to be. If he can up his game just a tiny bit, he can become a major contributor.
Tough schedule going forward but for now I’ll bask in the light of 3rd place all alone in the WCC standings.

Hard fought confidence building victory. First time at Gersten in 5 years, haven’t see a packed house like that in two decades. Student sections desperately needs some leadership and culture shift though.
Go lions.
