University of the Pacific – Part II
We gave Pacific a New Year’s Eve gift when we handed them their first WCC win on the road – 78-72. Pacific came into the game with a 7-9 record and was thought of a one of the weaker teams in the WCC.
Cam hadn’t quite emerged as our superstar yet and scored 14 points on 5-15 shooting. Anderson led LMU with 20 points followed by Alex with 15. Leaupepe was 2-7 for 7 points and Ahrens was 2-9, also for 7. Nick Blake, who averages 8.6 ppg, somehow led Tigers’ win with 23 points.
The Tigers went on to win 5 more WCC contests and now sports a 6-6 conference record and is competing for the 3-4 slot.
Pacific plays USF at home on Thursday before our Saturday contest.
Gametime: Saturday, Feb 18, 7 pm in Gersten.

The Gonzaga game is more exciting, but this is the more important game. We need to even up that tiebreaker against Pacific and keep ourselves in the 3/4 conversation, especially if both the Lions and Tigers have 7 wins heading into this one.

We control our own destiny. If we win our last two games against Pacific and Pepperdine we are in the top four.

I’ve not seen Pacific play this year. I understand they’ve got a couple good, athletic guards. If true, that’s a particular challenge for the Lions. We have a tough time matching up with aggressive athletic guards.

Lions are 9.5 point favorites Seems like a lot after the Zags game? It might be a few points high, but for the most part besides the BYU game, the Lions have answered back strong after a bad outing. It’s family weekend so Gersten will be packed, in fact I believe it’s close to sold out….. albeit with families that may not particularly be huge bball people. Either way, should be a full home crowd and we will do our best to get others to make noise. |

Issanza did not play at all in the second half of the game in Stockton and we continuously got burned with drives to the basket and no rim protection.
I think Coach has figured out since then that he needs one of the bigs in there to protect the rim so hopefully that will make a difference this time.

We are really missing Lamaj Lewis on defense. Cam, Keli, and Rick are all good defenders but Lamaj, with his size and versatility, really helps with certain matchups. Without him, opponents can exploit weaknesses that we are hard pressed to address. Sure hope he is back for tourney. Anyone know what his status is?

Pumpfake, I completely agree about Lamaj, especially with how Pacific beat us on the perimeter in Stockton.
I’m also concerned about Ahrens. He went down awkwardly early in the second half the other night and never came back.
Hopefully at least one of them is available for tonight.

If we play defense in the second half we should win this game. Thank goodness Cam has been fantastic.
