After a lackluster start to the season, the Gaels defeated #13 Colorado State on their home court! State was 9-0 entering the game. Announcers compared all-WCC point guard Mahaney to Damion Lillard. A much needed win for the Gaels. Can the Lions do the same tonight? During the game both coaches mostly sat in their seats.

Zags lose to #5 UCONN by 13. Gonzaga has a few strong starters but they’re not getting much off their bench.
Today and this evening the WCC faces some solid opponents. So far this season the WCC has not shown well. Hopefully today will be different.

For the first time in probably 10ish years Gonzaga does not have a all american talent on their roster and it shows, they aren't going to be able to compete with the countries top teams. I expect them to be a 4-5 seed come tourney time and hopefully they can make it to the sweet 16. Unfortunately we will be a 1 bid league unless someone upsets Gonzaga in the WCC tourney.

Saturday’s games were not friendly to the WCC. Santa Clara did win an upset victory over Washington State and Saint Mary’s survived a 2 OT win over UNLV. USF, LMU, Pacific and Portland all lost - the USF loss was a close contest (54-53) versus Utah State (11-1). On Friday, Gonzaga lost to #5 UCOnn by 13 points but USD beat Portland State. Regarding UNLV and their close game against the Gaels, were they missing an important player in earlier games like against the Lions? Mystery to me.
As of Sunday evening, the WCC standings look like:
Gonzaga 8-3 San Diego 8-4 San Francisco 8-4 Santa Clara 8-4 LMU 6-5 Saint Mary’s 6-5 Portland 6-6 Pepperdine 5-8 Pacific 4-8
I haven’t followed USD much but the Broncos and Dons look strong and the Zags weaker than their norm (which is pretty high).
I guess we could finish 4th in the WCC. We have the talent according to some but team play seems lacking. Hoping for the best for our Lions and Coach Johnson.

Regarding UNLV’s roster, for the St Mary’s game and then their big win over highly ranked Creighton, they had gotten back Keylan Boone, a decent but not great senior forward who gets about 8 points a game. He was something like 1/9 in the St Mary’s game.
It’s hard to explain how we beat UNLV then lose to UCSB while UNLV goes on to beat Creighton. Similarly, Santa Clara has looked really good AND really bad. Go figure ….

Pepperdine down 20 less than 15 minutes into the game at Spokane. Didn’t realize the Waves have the top two scorers in the conference yet will probably be a bottom three team.
Romar is the gift that keeps on giving.

Couldn’t agree more. Waves need him recruiting; then send him to Hawaii once the season starts

Pacific had the game won but USF tied it at the very end and won in OT. Gaels struggled a bit against USD. Boy, this was certainly the year to make a move in the WCC. Opportunity wasted!

USF faces the Gaels tonite at 8 pm on ESPN2. (Tuesday) The Gaels made short work of the Dons in their first match but are missing a leading scorer Jefferson tonite. USF impressed me last Saturday in Gersten so it may be a game worth watching.

Saint Mary’s (23-6) holds the #17 rating in the AP poll while Gonzaga (22-6) has worked its way into the top 25 at #23. Hoping both the Gaels and the Zags get invites to the Big dance. The Zags play USF Thursday (Gaels play Waves) and Gaels-Zags meet in a big game Saturday.

Busy Monday in the WCC.
Pepperdine has parted company with Lorenzo Romar.
Pacific also parted ways with head coach Leonard Perry.
With the Pac-12 champs and Oregon State joining the WCC next season, it’s only going to be that much more competitive.
