Don’t want to see anyone lose their jobs. CSJ isn’t perfect, but he knows how to hit the portal.
I think he gathered talented players for this past season. I think issues came down to lineup combinations and our defensive philosophy. Ie, playing three guards at the same time (3 of 4 of Hill, Johnston, Wright and Harris), all under 6-3, and switching everything on defense, teams easily figured it out. If they had a productive big, they set a high pick and then fed the big man being guarded by a guard. If their guard was productive, he would drive past our big. Other than a 1-3-1 zone we played a few possessions each game, we were easy to scout.
CSJ beat the Big Three last year. He deserves another year.

I’m not ready to shoo Coach Stan out the door, but some things MUST CHANGE.
I agree the existing coaching staff is contributing very little. I don’t know if that’s their fault or Coach Stan’s. But change is an absolute necessity. We need a Tex Winter kind of guy who can provide the Xs and Os that are so desperately needed. We need someone who can work with the bigs.
Coach Stan has to learn you can’t just bring in talented guys. You have to build a team. A team that has all of the parts. If you can recruit 5 guys who are all 5-star recruits, you don’t necessarily need all of the parts. But we are a long way from that luxury.
1) The team needs a good point guard. While nice to have, we don’t need an Anthony Ireland, but we need someone who can captain the team on the floor, understand the relative strengths and weaknesses of his teammates, and find those guys on the floor at the right time. A so called combo guard can relieve a good PG occasionally but you can’t build a good team around even a decent combo guard.
2. Coach Stan has to find a couple decent 3s. That position is typically your high scoring position and we have nothing. We also need a couple decent 3s for defense. We get crushed by opposing 3s because we have no one who can guard them.
3. We have to have a couple decent 7-footer bigs. They don’t have to be the second coming of Russell or Jabbar or O’Neal. Just someone who can take up space in the middle. AND someone to coach them. I could live with this year’s bigs, but, man, you gotta help them out with some decent coaching!
4. Who is your “go to” guy? I remember asking last Fall, who is going to be our “go to” guy. Unfortunately no one really stepped up. When putting together a team, Coach needs to identify his “go to” guy. He needs to find a player with the right attributes who can fill that role. CMD didn’t worry about it because he had so much arrogance that he felt he could fill that role himself. Coach Stan certainly doesn’t feel that way, but I’m not sure he recognizes the importance of having such a player.
5. You need an assortment of shooters. This last season that was one thing he achieved. We had good shooters. Unfortunately he doesn’t seem to know how to take full advantage of them. That is where a Tex Winters kind of guy comes in.
Bottom line - Coach Stan has brought some good things to the Bluff but he has proven he still has quite a ways to go to become a successful coach. Here’s hoping he figures it out QUICKLY!!

Stan might lose his whole team. This decision reeks of a lack of accountability.

I get a bad feeling about the state of the program. Massive changes are hard to make successful. Hope I'm wrong.

Interesting… Romar can definitely recruit, as long as someone else is diagramming the X’s & O’s.

I’ve been saying for two years that Coach Stan needs Romar to do his recruiting. Just don’t let him anywhere near the court! Tell him to stay on the road looking for talent.

On the other hand, Romar may have a home in SoCal that he wants to stay in and perhaps other family ties. Might take less salary than possible if he has to uproot his family and move on. Maybe he likes Stan too?

Is Romar still under contract with Pepperdine? Anyone know how many years he had left on his contract? Or was he let go when his contract expired?

One site has his salary from 2021 listed at 820k (https://pepperdine-graphic.com/pepperdines-990-reveals-top-paid-employees-for-2021/).
Isn't recruiting supposed to be Stan's strength? Romar is probably better at it, but feels strengthening our strengths without addressing our weaknesses.

I don’t disagree lionlife, but you can never have too much talent. That’s a problem that I think we’d all love to have.

What if Romar were to replace CSJ? As frustrated as I was this season I think that would be a deathwish for the program. Oh dear god.....
