Last friday I saw Edgar Garibay at Burns. I seemed like he and some of the team had just finished some pick up runs. The last report from scout was that he is doing a year of prep school. Maybe he will be joining us down the road. Didn't get a chance to watch him or talk to him. If I see him again I will see what is up.

Watched the boys Wednesday night intheir pick up games. Cedric Latimer, a Soph at Santa Clara who is looking to transfer because of the coaching change up there, was pretty impressive.
However it was Garibay and Armistad that were the most impressive. Garibay is a monster in the middle. Very good feet and hands and a nice soft touch on the ball. Word on the floor is that he intends to join us. But after a year at prep school he may not be available, as many schools will be after him, he's that good.
Armistead is a true diamond. Everyone he played against (some good players were out there) he domnated. Great stroke from the line and fearless on the attack. Good hands and accurate touch on the shot. And even more impressively he was a gentleman to me and clearly proud to be a Lion.
Brandon Worthy was also out there and boy is he GOOD. He was clearly a man among the boys. His Knees seem no problem and He was even at an NBA camp earlier in the summer. Lets pray for his success becasue he deserves it and can do the job at the next level.
The word form the coaches is that all of the recruits are very low maintenace guys who have good academics and high character. True Loyola Men.

I can still hear those chants...."We're not WORTHY....we're not WORTHY" I can still see that shot against NMSU going through the nylon.....sweet.....ESPN's play of the day......not to mention his dominance in the Alaska Shootout.....and what about that jam at SDSU and the one that did him in against Boise State. He is quite impressive and added to the excitement of LMU basketball...I wish Brandon all the luck!

Garibay better join our lions next year. We will be a force in the West. He would be silly to go anywhere else. Good sign that he is practicing at Gersten during the summer.

I found this story about Edgar.
Edgar Garibay is a 6-10 forward from Compton High School that at this stage could be compared to the Lopez twins on the court and in the classroom: extremely intelligent to go with considerable basketball potential. The aspiring English and journalism major is likely to write the book on being a highly sought after big man in California because he has great strength, good athletic ability, and that work ethic that is rare among one so young. Playing with and handling his own against the Lopez twins proved one thing: their Spanish surname isn't the only thing similar about them.
Humble times 10" is what describes this gentle giant off the court. But when 6-10 215 lb Edgar Garibay gets going on the court it's "move back and watch out time" for the competition. A second generation Latino from Mexico, Garibay is proud of his culture and loves to spend time with his mother Sandra Padilla and father Javier Garibay for fun these days. With Garibay you only hear him talk about hard work, family fun, and the importance of a great education after high school. "I love school; that's going to be the biggest determiner of which college I go to. Being an English major or studying journalism is a big goal of mine."
Where does this love of school come from? Look no further than Edgar's uncle Tony for a clue to this. His uncle is a primary grade educator in the Compton School district and is excited to see his nephew grow into the man that makes the family very proud. "Edgar is awesome; he works so hard and just keeps going and going to be his best. We're very proud of him and he is only touching the beginning of his potential."
Garibay had a 5-inch growth spurt in less than three months last summer and if that happens again his family might need to invest in a new ceiling to accommodate him. Garibay really enjoys high school competition as he states, "It is always fun getting up for games. I felt that the 16 points and 10 rebounds against Aliso Niguel was one of my better performances. Next year I'm going to be try and play like that game every time."
A great experience for Garibay last summer took place at the NBA Summer Pro Am in Long Beach. There he met and started to train with Adam Parada who was playing for the summer Sacramento Kings team, He states, "I really appreciate Adam helping to train me to get better. He's a cool guy and that whole experience of working with him and our trainer Mike Ponce was a highlight for me last year."
Ponce is noted for helping develop Kirk Snyder and Casey Jacobsen into NBA ready players and had great things to say about Garibay last summer, "Edgar has got a lot of potential. If he keeps up the good work ethic he will be a very good high school player and strong college prospect in the next four years."
Academics are paramount to Garibay in considering which college he will attend. He mentioned Harvard and the Ivy League when discussing colleges that he respects the most but he does realize that basketball is a love of his and playing at a very competitive college is also a big goal of his. "Right now I like Arizona, North Carolina, and Stanford the most. I'm excited to get out and start taking unofficial visits and maybe I'll go to some of the elite camps to get a feel for the colleges that I'm interested in."
Garibay has a goal of modeling his game after one particular NBA star: Kevin Garnett. He really loves the hustle and all around game of Garnett and states about him, "KG can do it all. He takes you down low and does it from the outside. That's who I love to watch and hope to be like when I get older."
Garibay is definitely mercury rising in terms of his game and maturity level compared to the other class of 2008 prospects. It's very early to evaluate kids this age- but Garibay is that rare prospect in the tradition of the Lopez twins that merit a close look because of his projected height, incredible academics, focus, and budding ability.

I have seen him on campus several times which is a great sign. The last i heard he is attending prep school, but I think we have a good chance. With Given and Edgar we have the start to an excellent class. Add Vinson and we will have the best class in the WCC.

I think we will be getting some very good news, soon. Garibay in the center will change everything in the WCC. Vinson on the wing with Davis and Viney on- board...unbelievable!

On Edgar Garibay's facebook it lists his school as Loyola Marymount '12.
Is this just hopeful thinking by Garibay or is it true? Does anyone have any info to confirm this??
Would be a huuuuuge pick up

I was thinking about that too. I think that he just joined the Loyola network and that it automatically put 2012 seeing as 2013 students don't know where they are going yet. Anyways im hope to see him here soon.
