Reviewing the Lions roster - I count 13 scholarship players including Kanne and the two Redshirts. Latimer, Libuit and Reilly are walk ons (to fill out the practice squad?). 3 Seniors are graduating (Deric, Kanne and Counts). We filled two spots with Garibay and Kalipinde leaving one scholarship by my count. This assumes we have only 13 BB scholarships to offer. Can anyone confirm this is a correct assumption? Is it an NCAA limit or an LMU funding limit? The latter could be worked by using a portion of Bayno's $500K salary we are saving. One scholarship or two, my preferences are Vinson, Lawson and Osborne. Maybe we can bring Kalipinde here on a soccer scholarship and have him walk on the BB team? But this is not really a classy act to open another scholarship spot on the BB team. NCAA might notice and call LMU for fraud. In re getting rid of Sweezy or Sutton, Sweezy has played many key minutes this year and plays 100% each night against the giants that dwarf him inside. I don't see Coach Good being so disloyal to a key team member. Sutton, I don't know - he hasn't played much in his first year after Redshirting. He has size and is definitely one of the strongest players on the team in terms of plugging up the middle. He seems to have soft hands and a decent jumper from short range but wasn't an impact player in his one year on the court. He might be expendable. Do teams do this? Withdraw a BB scholarship in mid career? In any case, lets load up with inside guys - we are solid at guard with Davis, DuBois, Teel and Kalipinde. Another less-than-outstanding guard probably would not get any minutes in the next two years in my view.

Found the answer to my own question thanks to GOOGLE: Last Thursday, loud applause resonated from college basketball coaches across the country. The “5-8” rule, which had been in effect since August of 2001, will be torn out of the NCAA rulebook. The NABC worked extremely hard to get this rule rescinded. Finally, the NCAA management council recommended the NCAA Board of Directors vote to lose the rule. Mission accomplished. The “5-8” rule allowed a basketball program to award up to a maximum of 5 scholarships in one year, and 8 during a two-year span. The maximum number of scholarship players one team can have is 13, but thanks to the “5-8” rule schools were often kept well under that number. www.collegehoopsnet.com/preview/specials/050504.htm

Upon reflection, I don't think LMU and Coach Good would pull the carpet out from either Sweezy or Sutton. It wouldn't look good to future recruits. Sutton, untested, has size and strength we need. So we have only one scholarship remaining to offer. Unless Teel proves to be an unhappy camper and leaves town - his relationship with Coach Good seems tense at times.

Vernon is staying. He has told me and a couple friends that the times we've asked him. He said as far as he knows no one is leaving.

A bit of more promising news....I ran into Alex Osborne on at Third Street in Santa Monica. He was really friendly. I told me he is making his official visit this upcoming weekend. He said " I think I'm gonna go there!". This is really great news. Lets hope all things work out and he becomes a Lion!

Thanks ironlions, great news - you need to tell us your secrets on how you know these guys by sight in civilian clothes. (Other than they are tall.) Are you in the BB game yourself? As coach or something?

Unimportant detail but Daniel Latimer, the 6'0" walk on this season, played at Windward so probably played against and knows Osborne. Maybe that connection will be helpful?
