I am surprised to see Armstead being discussed so much at shooting guard since we mostly saw him under the boards last year. And I was not that impressed with his perimeter shooting. Maybe if he is given the opportunity to play the perimeter, I will see a different Laron. I respect his defense though, no argument there.

Laron, in my opinion, has to play either the 2 or 3 for the majority of his minutes - in a regular setting. Last year was an aberration. He was inside so much because we, as a team, were soooo undersized. We shouldn't have that problem this year, which will allow players to play to their strengths.
Laron, from what I could tell, is a decent enough shooter - but that isn't why I would have him on the perimeter. His size will be an advantage against a number of guards, and his defense/quickness lends itself to the perimeter. I see Laron's effectiveness coming off the bench as 1) a perimeter lock down defender, and 2) a slasher from the wing - setting screens, getting by someone on a first step or back door play, and crashing the boards on a missed box out.
If we only played true "shooters" at the two ... that would be, what, one - maybe two - of our players? And neither one of them will actually play the "2" this year. Outside, or even midrange, shooting isn't a strength for the large majority of our guys.
I was taught that the 2 is one of two things. Either you're insane shooter, or you're alternate point guard. I don't think this team really lends itself to either interpretation. We don't have that luxury. I think the only line up that feeds into that scenario is JD and Larry in at the same time. Other than that - you're morphing the positions definitions.
All just my opinion. It will be fun to see what Coach does with the guys this year. He did an amazing job last year, with so few weapons, this year should be entertaining.
That's my opinion -

Watch for Laron to start. Have you seen him play lately? He is in the weight room every day and is an all hours of the day and night gym rat. He has added 15 pounds of solid muscle which allowed him to really play well against the pros and players from other DI programs. He, Tim and Swaze really go at it and it is tough to se who has the advantage.
In addition, Max loves the kid for his game.

Oldest Lion - I agree Laron has improved, and is a very valuable member of the team. He'll get a ton of minutes. The only problem I see is that there are only five starting positions - and Laron's going to be battling Vernon for his. Maybe Coach moves Laron to the 3 - but then what about Kevin. OK - you move Kevin to the 4 ... but then you have Drew. See my issue?
Coach has a great dilema - too many players that you could make a case for starting. Much better than last year's issues, huh?
I love Laron, his heart, and his attitude. But I have to stick with my five starters (barring injury). JD, Vernon, Kevin, Drew and Tim.
And truthfully, I'd start Sweezy if my heart could stand it. He's a joy to watch play - that man would tear down the Great Wall of China if Coach needed him to. Love that kid.
